WHAT ARE COMMUNITY FORUMS?

Community Forums provide an opportunity to get together with people in your area to discuss issues with each other and guest speakers. Each group, headed up by local people, works to bring in wonderful speakers and presentations on topics that are important and often currently under consideration by elected officials. Community Forums are an informal gathering where you can become more informed on issues, meet concerned residents in your neighborhood, and discover ways you can get involved to make your community and our state and nation a better place.

RECENT MONTHS' ISSUE RESOURCES

In areas where it is difficult to get speakers, DFL Links groups use documents on one or more issues as the basis for a monthly discussion.  In recent months, the top issues have been health care and energy and the bills currently being considered by Congress.  You can download any of the documents we have used for these discussions.  Click on "Full Resources by Topic" then click on the weblinks for the documents used in recent months.  You can find documents used in earlier months under "Past Meeting Documents."

DISCUSSION GROUPS

What's the difference between a Community Forum and a Discussion Group? A Community Forum has a major speaker that might travel a distance, and it has 30 or more attendees. They are usually held monthly on the fourth Tuesdays of the month.  A Discussion Group is usually 4 to 20 people. It can be private, such as a group of friends, co-workers, a social justice committee, people interested in issues in a precinct, or neighbors. Or it can be a public group with emails sent out and notices on calendars and in local newspapers. Hosts prepare to lead a discussion on a topic and occasionally invite
local speakers.

We encourage public DFL Links Discussion Groups to meet on the fourth Tuesday evenings in public locations such as restaurants, coffee shops, community centers, and libraries. Private Discussion Groups can meet any time in a private or a public location.  Materials on a topic are made available about a week before the 4th Tuesdays of the month.
