A reporter asked President Trump repeatedly for evidence of wiretapping. He didn’t answer.

The following article by Peter W. Stevenson was posted on the Washington Post website March 10, 2017:

President Trump tweeted almost a week ago that he “just found out” that former president Barack Obama wiretapped him during the 2016 election.

Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my “wires tapped” in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!

He followed up with tweets directly accusing Obama of being involved, calling the former president a “bad (or sick) guy!”

The accusations, and Trump’s assertion that he “just found out” about the alleged wiretapping, were so direct that onlookers quickly asked, “Where’s the evidence?” Obama quickly denied that he had ordered a wiretap of the Trump campaign, so it would have helped Trump’s case to provide some — any — evidence.

So far, he hasn’t.

That’s why, in a short photo op on Friday at the White House, reporters pressed him for that evidence. In the video above, you can hear ABC’s Jonathan Karl repeatedly, and bluntly, asking Trump if he had any evidence at all to support his accusations. And other reporters shouted questions about former national security adviser Michael Flynn and his ties to Turkey.

But handlers and security officers quickly began to usher the press out of the room, using a phrase — “thank you, press” — that seems polite, but really means, “It’s time to stop asking questions and leave.”

Trump ignored the questions, then shared a joke with Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.).

And just that quickly, the room went quiet, and the press filed out, leaving the public wondering about the same question Karl asked over and over: Does Trump actually have any evidence to back up his claim?
