House Republicans Vote to Raise Taxes on 36 Million Middle-Class Families

The following message from Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer was e-mailed November 17, 2017:

Yesterday, House Republicans passed their tax scam bill through the House, voting to raise taxes on 36 million middle-class families, provide massive tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans and corporations, and add $1.5 trillion dollars to the deficit. House Democrats unanimously opposed this tax scam that overwhelmingly benefits the wealthy while leaving the middle class behind and triggering a$25 billion cut to Medicare next year alone. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to reject this bill and work with Democrats to reform the tax code in a bipartisan, transparent, and revenue neutral fashion.
In addition, another week has passed in the Congress where my Republican colleagues ignored a number of critical issues. I continue to call on the GOP to bring the DREAM Act to the Floor and provide a permanent, legislative solution for DREAMers. We must also fund the government by December 8, pass the bipartisan Alexander-Murray bill to strengthen the Affordable Care Act, and reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program and other health extenders, among other expiring items. I urge Republicans to work with Democrats in a bipartisan fashion to address them before the end of the year.

This week, I was also proud to announce the launch of the Make It In America Listening Tour. Today and throughout the weekend, I am joining House Democrats in Las Vegas, Nevada; Kansas City, Missouri; and Peoria, Illinois to listen to Americans about the economic pressures they face and to learn about economic initiatives that have worked  and persistent economic challenges that need to be addressed. Hearing from the American people directly will help shape Democrats’ efforts to ensure that more of our people can Make it in America. You can follow along on social media using the #MakeItInAmerica and #ListeningTour hashtags.

Finally, I’d like to remind all Americans that the open enrollment period on HealthCare.gov ends on December 15. I am encouraged by the record number of Americans signing up for health coverage and encourage everyone to examine their coverage options on HealthCare.Gov before the December 15 deadline.
Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
