Rep. Melissa Hortman (36B) – Legislative Update
It’s another busy week at the Capitol. Here’s an update:
As a result of the premium relief bill signed into law recently, MNsure has announced an additional week special enrollment period. The extra week will give Minnesotans more time to purchase health insurance during open enrollment. The premium relief legislation will provide a 25% instant rebate to those purchasing health insurance on the individual market who don’t already qualify for MNSure tax credits.
The new deadline is Wednesday, February 8th. It is open to all Minnesotans; however, only through MNsure or directly through Blue Plus or Health Partners. For more information, visit MNsure.
On Thursday, the House Jobs Committee debated a “preemption” bill that would stop local communities from setting their own policies for workers such as sick leave, family leave, or a higher minimum wage. This legislation would roll back the sick leave benefits that were recently passed in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Our priority should be helping working families get ahead, and stay ahead, instead of making it harder for them to get by.
Made in MN Solar Incentive Program
Applications for the Made in Minnesota Solar Incentive Program will be accepted through February 28. This is the 4th year of the program, which helps residents, businesses and communities fund new solar electric and solar thermal systems. The program, administered by the Minnesota Department of Commerce, has helped fund over one thousand projects.
According to the Dept. of Commerce, over ten years, the Made in Minnesota program is expected to help fund as many as 4,000 solar installations and increase the state’s solar electric capacity by about 65MW, or more than four times the total capacity when the program begins.
Minnesotans who install solar PV or solar thermal systems using solar modules or collectors certified as manufactured in the state are eligible to apply. More information is available at the Made in Minnesota section of the Commerce Department website.
