Second Annual Jackie Stevenson Dinner set for May 4

Former Sen. Becky Lourey is keynote speaker

DFL Congressional District 3 will hold the Second Annual Jackie Jackie-Stevenson-Dinner-LogoStevenson Dinner, Sunday, May 4, 2014, at the UFCW Hall #653 in Maple Grove. The event begins with a social hour at 5:30 with the program beginning at 7 p.m.

Stevenson, who passed away in 2012, was a DFL party leader. She mentored candidates and was a trusted advisor to many. Stevenson attended state conventions for more than 50 years and was a former president of the DFL Feminist Caucus.

This year’s keynote speaker is former state Sen. Becky Lourey. A business owner, farmer, parent, and Gold Star Mother, Lourey’s life has allowed her to learn vital lessons of success and hardship that gives her a deep understanding of the everyday lives of Minnesotans.

The following Jackie Awards will be presented that evening:

  • Jackie Stevenson Award – for a consummate volunteer:  George Greene of Brooklyn Park.  Greene works tirelessly to elect DFLers in the 3rd CD.  He has served for years with the Business Democrats and was instrumental in founding the Small Business Minnesota group.
  • Rick Nelson Award – for someone who makes the trains run on time:  Ardis Wexler of Edina. Active in CD 3 politics for about 30 years, Wexler has worked on campaigns, on party committees and served as the CD 3 chair. In the last couple of years, Wexler has worked very hard on fundraisers and campaigns, including chairing Rep Ron Erhardt’s campaign in 2012.
  • Sen. Linda Scheid Award for a local legislator who works hard for everyone: Rep. Mike Nelson of Brooklyn Park. Rep. Nelson is a tireless worker to elect DFLers around the state.  He is a go to person on Union issues, pension questions and many other issues.  One of his most important pieces of legislation that he authored is HF950 that allows family child care providers and individual providers of direct support services to collectively bargain (known as the unionization bill).  Not only does he work tirelessly in St Paul, he also volunteers locally for Homeward Bound and assisted with building a playground in Northport Park in Brooklyn Center.
