Celebrating International Women’s Day in Minnesota
In a powerful show of solidarity, thousands of women dressed in red poured into the Minnesota State Capitol on Wednesaday in honor of International Women’s Day. Women, and the men who support them, carried signs – many saying ERA in honor of the Equal Rights Amendment.
Among the day’s events included a press conference to discuss the ERA Minnesota’s legislative agenda. Many of the women were visiting legislator’s offices to carry the message that women’s rights are human rights. Many of them were my own constituents and I was pleased to meet with them.
My Best Day Yet as a Senator
Many of you may know that every day for me is always the best ever, since every one should always be better than the last. Wednesday this past week truly fit the bill. Aside from seeing all of the activism on International Women’s Day, I also got to address Mark Bray’s class of seniors at Eden Prairie High School here at the capitol. Former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Paul Anderson invited us all into the capitol courtroom and offered me a few minutes to speak. My legislative assistant later told me that he had not seen me more in my element since I was sworn in.
Keeping Our State Safe From Gun Violence
Tuesday was gun violence prevention day at the capitol, and I was given a short amount of time to address the crowd gathered in the rotunda. In this speech, I told them about how few things in my life have been harder than showing up to class the day after a school shooting and facing my students. Despite our political differences, it is our duty to enact meaningful bipartisan legislation to prevent any further tragedies.
At the rally, I ran into two of my former students at Eden Prairie High School. Annette Luther graduated in the class of 2000 and Melissa Seeley from my second year at the high school, who graduated in ’87.
