Updated 1:24 p.m. | President Donald Trump on Monday announced a trade deal with Mexico aimed at revamping parts of the North American Free Trade Agreement, but Canadian officials still must sign off on the pact.

The president hailed the preliminary pact as a “big deal” in a Monday morning tweet, but — at least for now — it does not include Canada. Trump said during an Oval Office announcement that the new pact would not be called NAFTA.

The president dubbed the pact the “United States-Mexico Trade Agreement,” saying he wants to do away with the NAFTA moniker because it carries negative connotations.

“It’s a big day for trade. It’s a big day for our country,” Trump told reporters.

NASHVILLE — President Trump insisted anew on Tuesday that Mexico will pay for his proposed border wall and “enjoy it” as he tied Republican success in the November midterm elections to a continued focus on illegal immigration and border security.

Democrats are “bad at everything, but they’re good at sticking together” in Congress, Trump said as he campaigned for Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.). Continue reading “Trump ties Republican midterm strategy to immigration, claims Mexico will pay for border wall”

Trump systematically alienates the Latino diaspora — from El Salvador to Puerto Rico and Mexico

THE BIG IDEA: A Manchurian Candidate who was secretly trying to alienate Hispanics would be hard pressed to do as much damage to the Republican brand as President Trump.

The administration announced Monday that it will terminate the provisional residency permits of about 200,000 Salvadorans who have lived in the United States since at least 2001, leaving them to face deportation. Trump previously ended what is known as Temporary Protected Status for Nicaraguans and Haitians, and he’s expected to cut off Hondurans later this year. How Trump is building a border wall that no one can see

President Trump’s vision of a “big, beautiful” wall along the Mexican border may never be realized, and almost certainly not as a 2,000-mile physical structure spanning sea to sea.

But in a systematic and less visible way, his administration is following a blueprint to reduce the number of foreigners living in the United States — those who are undocumented and those here legally — and overhaul the U.S. immigration system for generations to come. Trump suggests that protesting NFL player is more loyal to Mexico than to U.S.

President Trump expanded his attack on the patriotism of protesting NFL athletes by introducing a new topic into the conversation: Mexico.

Since his attacks on NFL players intensified while he was campaigning for the Alabama Senate race, Trump has tried to paint the athletes as disloyal to America — and, just as important, to American citizens.

A frequent pivot of the president’s was to focus on how disrespectful he thinks the protests are to veterans and soldiers. Continue reading “Trump suggests that protesting NFL player is more loyal to Mexico than to U.S.”

Trump urged Mexican president to end his public defiance on border wall, transcript reveals

The following article by Greg Miller was posted on the Washington Post website August 3, 2017:

President Trump made building a wall along the southern U.S. border and forcing Mexico to pay for it core pledges of his campaign.

But in his first White House call with Mexico’s president, Trump described his vow to charge Mexico as a growing political problem, pressuring the Mexican leader to stop saying publicly that his government would never pay. 6 Countries Trump Has Already Insulted And Provoked

Two weeks into Donald Trump’s belligerent presidency, one must ask: Where will this administration’s launch its first serious international conflict?

The White House’s announcement Friday of narrow economic sanctions against Iran, in response to its dumb test firing of a missile, came after Trump made it sound like Iran had done something outsized and horrific. It hadn’t. Still, the president tweeted hours before announcing the sanctions, “Iran is playing with fire” and, “They don’t appreciate how ‘kind’ President Obama was to them. Not me!” Continue reading “6 Countries Trump Has Already Insulted And Provoked”
