Republican obstructionism has slowed the investigation, but not killed it.

What happened to RussiaGate?

A month ago, the headlines were flowing. National Security Adviser Michael Flynn had been fired for lying about his meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Attorney General Jeff Sessions had to recuse himself because he lied, under oath, about what he knew of the meeting.

The House Intelligence Committee investigation was investigating possible connections between Russian officials and President Trump’s entourage, as well as Trump’s false March 4 Twitter blast claiming that President Obama had wiretapped him. The Pentagon’s top watchdog has launched an investigation into money that former national security adviser and retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn received from foreign groups and whether he failed to obtain proper approval to do so, lawmakers and defense officials said Thursday.

The Pentagon has in the past advised retiring officers that because they can be recalled to military service, they are subject to the Constitution’s rarely enforced emoluments clause, which prohibits top officials from receiving payments or favors from foreign governments. Why The Flynn-Russia Affair Is So Troubling For Trump

The following article by Kurt Eichenwald was posted on the Newsweek website February 21, 2017:

Perhaps the Russia scandal seemed like it had disappeared amid the antics of the past week, from Trump’s rambling, 77-minute press conference, his Saturday rally—where he surprised Sweden with news of some imaginary immigrant disaster the previous night—or his declaration that the news media was the enemy of the American people.  Continue reading “Why The Flynn-Russia Affair Is So Troubling For Trump”

The following newsletter by Ishaan Tharoor was sent February 15, 2017:

The fallout over the resignation of Michael T. Flynn, President Trump’s national security adviser, is still settling over Washington. Reporting by my colleagues on Monday night seemed to make Flynn’s position in the White House untenable. They revealed that officials from the Justice Department had warned the Trump administration that Flynn had likely misled the White House regarding his conversations with the Russian ambassador — and that he was potentially vulnerable to Kremlin blackmail. After a steady drumbeat of speculation, Flynn tendered his resignation just before midnight. Continue reading “American extremist”
