A former Republican strategist has hit out at party leaders who have “enabled” Donald Trump’s behavior, stating they “deserve the reckoning that will eventually come for the GOP.”
Sally Bradshaw, strategist and one of the authors of the Republican National Committee’s Growth and Opportunity Project, slammed Trump’s leadership as divisive and spoke about her disappointment with the party as rumors circulated that the president was preparing to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
“Donald Trump is anti-woman, anti-Hispanic, anti-black, anti-anything that would bring the country together,” Bradshaw told Buzzfeed in an interview.
“The only thing he is for is himself. Those in Republican leadership who have enabled his behavior by standing silent or making excuses for him deserve the reckoning that will eventually come for the GOP,” she added.
Among the recommendations laid out by the Republican National Committee’s Growth and Opportunity Project was the inclusion of Hispanic voters, with immigration among the issues considered by Hispanic voters as a “litmus test” for how they viewed the GOP.
And with reports that Trump is planning to announce an end to DACA on Tuesday, Bradshaw is disappointed that the recommendations laid out by the project have not been considered at all.
“It makes me terrifically sad to be honest—sad for the party of ideas that I supported for over 30 years—even more sad for the country and the fact that we can no longer have a credible and important debate about issues that will lead to problem solving,” she told Buzzfeed.
“I am a conservative. But I can’t and won’t be a Republican as long as Donald Trump is the leader of the Republican Party,” she added.
Trump has not confirmed whether he is indeed intending to end DACA, but two sources quoted by Politico suggest the announcement will come on Tuesday.
The reported decision has been met with dismay by Dreamers and supporters, with former president Barack Obama said to be mulling an opposing statement on the topic in response to any announcement on ending DACA by Trump.
