Talking Points: High stakes races for Smith and Housley, WCCO

In an alarming and deeply concerning interview with the Star Tribune, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Karin Housley said that she did not have or know of any proposals to preserve and protect Social Security, which provides economic security to millions of Minnesotans and Americans, saying, “I haven’t sat down to look at any of them. I haven’t seen them.” The exchange, which took place last week at the State Fair, raises the question whether Housley has thought at all about this critical lifeline for seniors and families…Then, later that day in an off-mic moment on AM1280, Housley can be heard mocking the exchange on Social Security, admitting, “Well I found the issues I need to brush up on” and then laughing after telling the AM1280 host that the Star Tribune wanted to know “How I would fix social security.” VIDEO: http://bit.ly/2LPNaAp morning take

Health Care

U.S. entitlement spending is increasingly going to the middle class, according to a Brookings Institution report. And health care is the main driver, Axios’ Stef Kight reports.

Between the lines: Medicaid expansion has made more lower-middle income Americans eligible for the program, and now less than half of Medicaid spending goes to the lowest quintile.

  • Medicare Part D subsidies increased the share of health spending going to the middle class among the elderly.
  • Medicaid spending on elderly households (65 years or older) has tripled since 1979, and around 60% of it went to the middle class in 2014.
  • The Affordable Care Act’s cost-sharing subsidies, designed to lower out-of-pocket costs, have contributed to the overall trend.

Why it matters: As wages have remained stagnant and income inequality grows, the middle class is increasingly relying on the federal safety net. Changes to the ACA or Medicaid would thus touch sectors of the electorate well beyond the poor. Axios

Immediate impact of Janus decision limited, though challenges remain, Duluth News Tribune

All the mines on Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range run hot today, despite the expiration of labor contracts at facilities owned by U.S. Steel and ArcelorMittal last night.

The United Steelworkers of America agreed to stay on the job while negotiations continue. The union represents workers at mines and mills throughout the North American steel industry.

Those negotiations aren’t going well, according to the union. Just today, the USW issued a statement saying that another offer from U.S. Steel still calls for concessions, despite signs of strength in the domestic steel industry.

The union argues that expensive concessions in health care coverage would negate the small pay increases offered by the company. Further, the union already gave concessions during the steel industry downturn three years ago. They want the new contract to reflect changes in the bottom line.

As a result, negotiations continue. The Steelworkers are officially preparing for a strike or a company lockout, which are possible outcomes if contract talks don’t improve soon.
