Rep. Andrew Carlson (HD50B) Update: December 10, 2019

holidays

Dear Neighbors,

The holiday season can be a busy time of year, but finding some quiet time for contemplation can really get you into the holiday spirit. As I think back on the past few months, I’m reminded of how grateful I am for all the good work happening in Bloomington. For instance, I recently attended a groundbreaking for a new veteran’s transitional housing project. Once constructed, this new residence will provide veterans with stable housing as they receive the services and support they need to transition into independent living.

vetsA warm, safe house can easily be taken for granted, but for some that’s not the case. Older homes can be less energy efficient causing them to be drafty and cold. Thanks to Karol of Bloomington for inviting Commissioner Kelley and me into her home to show us the improvements she made with help from the Weatherization Assistance Program. Karol explained how this federally-funded program provides updates to income-qualifying Minnesota Households.

comishOn the topic of building improvements, Normandale Community College recently completed several projects that will enhance the campus community. The courtyard renovations reinvigorate exterior green space as a central focal point, providing studying and gathering space. Tunnel repairs fix recurring storm water drainage and retention issues and mitigate moisture in tunnels connecting adjoining buildings. This first phase of the college services renovation provides easier navigation and access to key student services, and a single point-of-service.

normandaleState Budget Forecast

Last week, we received our bi-annual economic forecast for the state. While Minnesota is in a stable financial position, the forecast does not include inflation. State budget analysts presented financial challenges we may face in the future, which could undermine our ability to deliver a world-class education for our students, a safe and reliable transportation infrastructure, and strong health care coverage for Minnesotans. It’s important to exercise caution; which is why I plan to co-author legislation that would include the rate of inflation in these economic forecasts, so we can be diligent in future fiscal planning.

You can read more about the projected budget forecast from MPR here.
