Rep. Laurie Pryor (HD48A) Update: May 20, 2021

Neighbors,

The regular legislature session adjourned on Monday, following an announcement by Governor Tim Walz, House Speaker Melissa Hortman, and Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka on an outline for a new two-year state budget. The agreement sets up the framework and a roadmap for final negotiations to finish the legislative session.

The pandemic has been difficult for everyone, but Minnesotans have been hit unequally. Our bipartisan budget prioritizes those most impacted by COVID-19, enacting a state budget focusing on our students, families, workers, and small businesses. Working groups will begin meeting to finalize agreements on all the individual budget bills and I will continue to advocate for our youngest learners.

Summer Learning

We received great news this week with Gov. Tim Walz’s announcement to allocate $75 million from the American Rescue Plan Act to fund enhanced summer learning programs to assist students recovering from COVID-19 learning challenges. We all want the best for our students and this funding is critically needed to help our kids and families catch up academically and emotionally.

COVID-19 Vaccination Update

Although the statewide face covering requirement has changed, it is still recommended those who are not vaccinated continue to adhere to local rules and guidance. The best way to protect everyone is to get a vaccine. The Minnesota Department of Health reports more than 2.7 million Minnesotans have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Check out Minnesota’s COVID-19 mn.gov/vaccineconnector, call 833-431-2053 or ask your health care provider to help you find a vaccine.
