GOP senator warns his party must decide between ‘conservatism and madness’

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), who’s said he may vote this month to convict former President Trump on an article of impeachment, is pushing back against possible retaliation from the Nebraska Republican State Central Committee by warning that his party must choose between “conservatism and madness.”

Sasse on Thursday released a five-minute video responding to Republican officials back home who want to censure him at a Republican State Central Committee meeting on Feb. 13 because of his criticism of Trump.

He warned that purging Trump skeptics from the GOP is “not only civic cancer for the nation [but] just terrible for our party.”  Continue reading.

GOP Sen. Josh Hawley gets condemned by fellow Republican: ‘ ‘Lies have consequences’

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) is still angry about his Republican colleague Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) recent political stunt in support of President Donald Trump’s dangerous coup to challenge the Electoral College certification despite the U.S. Capitol breach that led to the deaths of five people. 

On Friday, Jan.8, Sasse appeared on NPR’s “Morning Edition” with host Steve Inskeep where he discussed the disturbing series of events that unfolded this week. The Republican lawmaker lambasted Hawley for his attempt to invalidate the outcome of the election on behalf of a disgraced president.

Sasse did not hold back when it came to sharing his brutally honest opinion of the Missouri senator. “Senator Hawley was doing something that was really dumbass, and I have been clear about that in public and in private since long before he announced he was going to do this” Sasse said. McConnell in a pickle after GOP senator blasts Trump’s executive orders as ‘unconstitutional slop’

AlterNet logoPresident Donald Trump on Saturday signed four executive orders that may provide economic relief for some Americans as Congress remains at an impasse.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) backed Trump’s moves, despite their dubious legal grounding.

“Struggling Americans need action now. Since Democrats have sabotaged backroom talks with absurd demands that would not help working people, I support President Trump exploring his options to get unemployment benefits and other relief to the people who need them the most,” McConnell said in a statement. Ben Sasse, Susan Collins Warn Trump About Firing Jeff Sessions

Republican senators grew increasingly vocal in their warnings to President Donald Trump if he fires Attorney General Jeff Sessions, including threats not to vote for a replacement.

Sen. Ben Sasse came to the floor Thursday afternoon to read into the Congressional Record the statement that Sessions, a former Alabama senator well-liked by his former colleagues, issued in response to criticism from Trump.

Sessions was highlighting the independence of the Justice Department, and Sasse, a Nebraska Republican, wanted it to be perfectly clear that he would have the attorney general’s back.
