Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This week the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners doubled down on the vaccine incentive program Hennepin created last month through a board action request I authored. I’m very pleased this strategy will now reach even more residents, and expand out County’s ability to increase trust, decrease vaccine hesitancy and reduce disparities. I spoke with KARE 11 about the expansion of our incentive program. Watch the interview >>

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This week I attended the National Association of Counties (NACo) Annual Conference. These gatherings offer county officials nationwide the opportunity to share best practices and join forces in advocacy to better serve our residents.

During the gathering I connected with with Deputy U.S. Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo, the Federal official responsible for local government implementation of the American Rescue Plan (ARP). Hennepin County is receiving $240 million in Federal ARP investments. It’s an historic opportunity to build back better post-pandemic.

Hennepin County also received 17 awards from NACo, including top honors for an innovative training program intended to reduce disparities and improve racial equity. More details on those awards are below.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This week the Board approved $100,000 in playground projects and $124,823 in small equipment and/or other small capital assets funding through our Hennepin Youth Sports Program. These grants include a total of $61,506 for four projects in District 6, including playgrounds in Edina and Shorewood and sports equipment in Orono.

The Hennepin Youth Sports Program awards capital grants to build, repair, renovate or expand youth sports facilities in Hennepin County. Earlier this month, I was able to see one of these finished projects at the Shorewood Badger Park grand opening. The Youth Sports Program helped fund the new playground. It also contributed to synthetic turf for a multipurpose field at Badger Park.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This week the Board approved changes to Hennepin County’s COVID-19 Safety Plan rolling back mask requirements for vaccinated residents and authorizing a return to regular service in our libraries and service centers. We are grateful for your patience as these updates are fully implemented.

Additionally, I introduced a resolution dedicating $100,000 to establish a vaccine incentive program in Hennepin County. This action is aimed at reducing vaccine disparities and increasing community trust. I’m grateful to my Board colleagues for their unanimous support of this action, and that our Public Health team and community leaders will have another tool to encourage residents to get vaccinated.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This week I toured the Brooklyn Park Recycling and Transfer Station which will be the site of the future Anaerobic Digestion Facility. The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners recently approved a new Anaerobic Digestion Facility. The New Anaerobic Digestion Facility will help in diverting more organics from trash and developing infrastructure to adequately manage the increased diversion of organics. This is critical as organics decomposing in landfills produce methane, a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide in terms of trapping solar radiation and exacerbating climate change.

In the meantime, residents can dispose of household hazardous waste and problem materials such as appliances, mattresses, electronics, paint, and more at the Brooklyn Park Recycling and Transfer Station.

Hennepin County facility will turn organic waste into biogas

Sun Current Logo

Hennepin County officials are planning to construct a facility that will turn organic waste into usable biogas as part of the county’s ongoing efforts in environmental sustainability.

Approved unanimously by the Board of Hennepin County Commissioners June 1, the anaerobic digestion facility will process household and commercial waste including food scraps, soiled paper and compostable products, which comprise about 30% of the municipal solid waste collected in the county, according to a staff report to the board.

The facility, to be located next to the Brooklyn Park Transfer Station, will be constructed with the county’s current waste collection goals in mind. The county’s Solid Waste Management Plan includes a goal of recycling 75% of waste by 2030, an aspiration that will require organics recycling, the staff report mentions. Continue reading.
