Trump urges Justice Department to ‘act’ on Comey, suggests Huma Abedin should face jail time

In an interview with the New York Times last week, Trump asserted that he has the “absolute right to do what I want with the Justice Department.” (Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post)

The following article by David Nakamura and Matt Zapotosky was posted on the Washington Post website January 2, 2017:

President Trump on Tuesday appeared to suggest that Huma Abedin, a former top aide to Hillary Clinton, should face jail time, days after the State Department posted emails found on her estranged husband’s computer that included confidential government information.

In a tweet, Trump also urged the Justice Department to act in prosecuting Abedin and former FBI director James B. Comey, whom the president fired in May amid the mounting investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election and contacts between Moscow and Trump’s campaign. Jeff Sessions reportedly orders review of debunked Hillary Clinton claims, violating recusal vow

The following article by Josh Israel was posted on the ThinkProgress website December 21, 2017:

Not exactly ‘fair and impartial administration of justice.’

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions

For weeks, critics of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the Trump administration have pushed a widely debunked conspiracy theory that she sold 20 percent of America’s uranium to Russia in exchange for a large donation to the Clinton Foundation.

On Thursday, NBC News reported that, on orders from Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the Department of Justice’s prosecutors “have begun asking FBI agents to explain the evidence they found in a now-dormant criminal investigation into a controversial uranium deal that critics have linked to Bill and Hillary Clinton.” Continue reading “Jeff Sessions reportedly orders review of debunked Hillary Clinton claims, violating recusal vow”

Prosecutors ask FBI agents for info on Uranium One deal

The following article by Tom Winter, Peter Williams and Ken Dilanian was posted on the NBC News website December 21, 2017:

On the orders of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Justice Department prosecutors have begun asking FBI agents to explain the evidence they found in a now dormant criminal investigation into a controversial uranium deal that critics have linked to Bill and Hillary Clinton, multiple law enforcement officials told NBC News.

The interviews with FBI agents are part of the Justice Department’s effort to fulfill a promise an assistant attorney general made to Congress last month to examine whether a special counsel was warranted to look into what has become known as the Uranium One deal, a senior Justice Department official said. In an attempt to control the fall-out from Michael Flynn pleading guilty to lying to the FBI, Donald Trump tried to equate Flynn’s actions with those of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser, pleaded guilty over the weekend and is now cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible Russian collusion with the Trump White House. Naturally, however, the President thought that Flynn had been treated “very unfair”.

“Hillary Clinton lied many times to the FBI”, Trump told reporters ahead of boarding Marine One for a trip to Utah. “Nothing happened to her. Flynn lied, and they destroyed his life. I think it’s a shame. Hillary Clinton, on the 4th of July weekend, went to the FBI, not under oath. It was the most incredible thing anyone’s ever seen. She lied many times. Nothing happened to her. Flynn lied, and it’s like they ruined his life. It’s unfair.” On Saturday Trump had also tweeted about the indictment, complaining that Flynn pleading guilty showed how the system was “rigged”. A former television news editor for Russian state media outlet Rossiya says that the Kremlin used to call and give instructions about how to cover Hillary Clinton during the 2016 U.S. election.

“Sometimes it was a phone call. Sometimes it was a conversation,” Dimitri Skorobutov told The New Yorker Thursday. “If Donald Trump has a successful press conference, we broadcast it for sure. And if something goes wrong with Clinton, we underline it.”

“Me and my colleagues, we were given a clear instruction: to show Donald Trump in a positive way, and his opponent, Hillary Clinton, in a negative way,” Skorobutov said at a recent speech at a journalism conference in Maastricht in the Netherlands. The Memo: Trump tries to deepen Dem divisions

President Trump is trying to foment tensions in the Democratic Party, after new revelations about last year’s primary campaign emerged from Donna Brazile, who served as interim head of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

But Democrats in both the pro-Hillary Clinton and pro-Bernie Sanderswings of the party insist that Trump’s interjections will only bring them together.

“Nothing unites the Democratic Party like Trump,” said Tad Devine, who was a senior advisor to Sanders during last year’s primary but was speaking to The Hill in a personal capacity. “If he gets in the middle, it brings us together. If he had a little more patience, he would have let the thing go for a day or two — but he can’t help himself.” Continue reading “The Memo: Trump tries to deepen Dem divisions”

Hillary Clinton on the conservative media: ‘It appears they don’t know I’m not president’

The following article by Kristine Phillips was posted on the Washington Post website October 31, 2017:

Hillary Clinton was nowhere near Washington the day charges against President Trump’s former campaign chairman were announced and news broke that a former Trump campaign volunteer had pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents about meeting with Russian officials.

She was in Chicago where she promoted her book (“I have a great chapter about Russia”), thought about her Halloween costume (“I think I will maybe come as the president”) and quipped about conservative media outlets’ preoccupation with a vanquished presidential candidate while big news surrounded the one who won. The repeated, incorrect claim that Russia obtained ‘20 percent of our uranium’

The following article by Glenn Kessler was posted on the Washington Post website October 31, 2017:

“How is it that our government could approve a sale of 20 percent of our uranium at the same time that there was an open FBI investigation?”
— Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), interview with Fox News’s Neil Cavuto, Oct. 26, 2017

“Knowing what you know about Russia, was it really a good idea for the Obama administration and the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to approve a deal giving the Russians control of 20 percent of our uranium supply? . . . Why did Hillary’s office and the Obama administration sign off on giving the Russians a fifth of our uranium? . . . Why is that a good idea to give a hostile power 20 percent of our uranium supplies? It’s insane though. . . . How would Hillary Clinton not know if a Russian company was getting 20 percent of our uranium supply? What was she doing?”

Trump breaks silence, says probe should focus on Hillary Clinton

The federal government’s case against former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and a longtime business associate is, for now, focused solely on their activities before going to work for Donald Trump.

The counts include conspiracy against the United States, money laundering and other ones related to their private business dealings. They are the first individuals charged in the Justice Department’s investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

But those expecting special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, a former FBI director, to file initial charges alleging Manafort and right-hand man Rick Gates colluded with the Kremlin during the 2016 campaign will find nothing of the sort in the indictment that was unsealed and released as Manafort was turning himself in at a FBI office in Washington. Video: James Comey and the draft statement clearing Hillary Clinton

The following article by Meg Kelly and Glenn Kessler was posted on the Washington Post website October 30, 2017:

Here’s what we know about former FBI director James B. Comey’s decisions about how to end the Clinton email probe. (Meg Kelly/The Washington Post)

“Wow, FBI confirms report that James Comey drafted letter exonerating Crooked Hillary Clinton long before investigation was complete. Many people not interviewed, including Clinton herself. Comey stated under oath that he didn’t do this-obviously a fix? Where is Justice Dept?”
— President Trump, in tweets, Oct. 18, 2017

In a pair of tweets, President Trump essentially called for a Justice Department investigation of former FBI director James B. Comey, whom he fired in May. He suggested Comey misled Congress under oath about his decision-making on whether to charge former secretary of state Hillary Clinton over her use of a private email server for official government communications.
