Why Does DirecTV Subsidize Racist Far-Right OAN Network?

National Memo logo

After the police killing of George Floyd, both DirecTV and its parent company, AT&T, made statements across social media claiming to support racial justice, including “advancing equal justice reforms” for Black Americans and promising to “continue to learn and listen” to their experiences with racism. DirecTV even promoted racial justice programming titled after some of Floyd’s final words, “I can’t breathe,” to promote “discussion on systemic racism in our society.” But these messages are a stark contrast to the racist lies spread on right-wing cable outlet One America News — programming that DirecTV and AT&T financially support.

Like most pay-TV contracts, DirecTV pays OAN subscription fees, also known as carriage fees, in exchange for the conservative network being available to DirecTV customers, whose subscription costs pay for OAN. The network reportedly relies on these subscriber fees — not ad revenue, which at Fox has proven vulnerable to controversy — as its primary funding source. DirecTV is also OAN’s largest distributor, making the service a vital lifeline for the up-and-coming network with an “almost pre-web” online presence and only a fraction of the audience of Fox News.

OAN claims its distribution reaches 35 million viewers compared to Fox News’ 84 million, though a spring 2019 Nielsen attempt to quantify OAN ratings (since the network does not subscribe to Nielsen) with data from some large metro areas found an average of 14,000 nightly viewers, compared to Fox’s 631,000. With OAN’s reported 13.6 million DirecTV subscribers, at a rate of 15 cents per subscriber per month, OAN would cost DirecTV $24,480,000 every year. Continue reading.

Kremlin Assets Aided Pro-Trump 2020 Documentary Featuring Caputo, Nunes

National Memo logo

Russian government proxies “helped produce a documentary that aired on a US television network” as part of the Kremlin’s wide-ranging effort to influence the 2020 presidential election by falsely accusing President Joe Biden of corruption in Ukraine, the U.S. intelligence community revealed in a report Tuesday.

The report does not explicitly identify the documentary or network in question. But the timeline and subject matter match The Ukraine Hoax: Impeachment, Biden Cash, and Mass Murder, which the pro-Trump One America News Network aired in late January 2020. Former Trump aide Michael Caputo hosted that one-hour special, which featured separate interviews with a former Ukrainian official later sanctioned by the federal government for his role in a Russian influence operation and with Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), at the time the chair of the House Intelligence Committee.

According to the report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized Russian influence operations aimed at undermining Biden’s campaign and supporting then-President Donald Trump during the 2020 election cycle. The report assesses that Russian intelligence services and their Ukraine-linked proxies — including “Russian influence agent” Konstantin Kilimnik and Ukrainian legislator Andriy Derkach — sought to use U.S. media outlets and prominent Americans to launder allegations of corrupt ties between Biden, his family, and Ukraine, and to falsely accuse Ukraine of interfering in the 2016 presidential election. OAN correspondent goes ‘full Q in the briefing room’ — tells Trump the media has ‘teamed up’ with foreign state propaganda

AlterNet logoThe White House press briefing room this week implemented a temporary seating chart to accommodate the Center for Disease Control and Preventions’s social distancing guidelines, but Donald Trump’s staff still managed to carve out space for One America News Network, the far-right network known for it’s pro-Trump content. And on Thursday, that network’s correspondent, Chanel Rion used her hard-hitting journalistic chops to ask the president whether he considers the term “Chinese food”  racist, and rant against the “left-wing media” that “consistently [sides] with foreign state propaganda” just to oppose Trump.

No summary can do Rion’s question justice, so here she is in her own words: Continue reading “OAN correspondent goes ‘full Q in the briefing room’ — tells Trump the media has ‘teamed up’ with foreign state propaganda”
