Republican Madison Cawthorn upholds Viet Cong militants as Second Amendment heroes

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) had an awkward moment with a Newsmax host Wednesday evening when discussing why AR-15s and military weapons should continue to be legal for anyone to use.

Cawthorn tried to argue that assault rifles are necessary to protect America against the federal government, which he works for.

“If anybody ever wants to say ‘oh, well you know what, citizens with a few small arms fire would never be able to stop the federal government’ – I absolutely disagree. Ask the Viet Cong how they handled the Marines and the Army in Vietnam,” said Cawthorn.  Continue reading.

‘Highway robbery’: Madison Cawthorn raises suspicions by paying inexperienced buddy $127,111 as top staffer

Raw Story Logo

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) appears to be overpaying an underqualified friend to serve on his congressional staff.

Quarterly disbursement statements show Cawthorn’s chief of staff William “Blake” Harp made $31,777.77 in the first quarter of the year, the equivalent of $127,111 annually, despite having no background in government and not much other work experience besides running fireworks stands, reported the Citizen Times.

“One hundred twenty-seven thousand dollars is not exorbitant for a chief,” said another Republican legislative staff member. “It’s highway robbery for anyone for whom it’s their first real job and they bring no discernible skills.” Continue reading.

GOP Congressman ‘Happy’ To Tout COVID-19 Stimulus Funds That He Voted Against

Rep. Madison Cawthorn, like every other Republican in Congress, opposed the American Rescue Plan.

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) sent out a tweet Tuesday touting some funds that community health centers in his district will be receiving ― even though he voted against the legislation that made the money possible.

Cawthorn wrote that he was “happy” to announce that North Carolina’s 11th District received a number of grants from the Department of Health and Human Services.

“Proud to see tax-payer dollars returned to NC-11,” he wrote in a follow-up tweetContinue reading.

The making of Madison Cawthorn: How falsehoods helped propel the career of a new pro-Trump star of the far right

Washington Post logo

Cawthorn has emerged as one of the most visible figures among newly arrived House Republicans, who have promoted baseless assertions and pushed a radicalized ideology that has become a driving force in the GOP

Madison Cawthorn was a 21-year-old freshman at a conservative Christian college when he spoke at chapel, testifying about his relationship with God. He talked emotionally about the day a car accident left him partially paralyzed and reliant on a wheelchair.

Cawthorn said a close friend had crashed the car in which he was a passenger and fled the scene, leaving him to die “in a fiery tomb.” Cawthorn was “declared dead,” he said in the 2017 speech at Patrick Henry College. He said he told doctors that he expected to recover and that he would “be at the Naval Academy by Christmas.”

Key parts of Cawthorn’s talk, however, were not true. The friend, Bradley Ledford, who has not previously spoken publicly about the chapel speech, said in an interview that Cawthorn’s account was false and that he pulled Cawthorn from the wreckage. An accident report obtained by The Washington Post said Cawthorn was “incapacitated,” not that he was declared dead. Cawthorn himself said in a lawsuit deposition, first reported by the news outlet AVL Watchdog, that he had been rejected by the Naval Academy before the crash. Continue reading.

Rep. Madison Cawthorn Mocked For Not Knowing Vatican City Is Its Own Country

Huff Post logo

The first-term lawmaker didn’t think a new rule about vaccinations in Vatican City sounded legal, even though Vatican City is an independent state.

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) isn’t impressing Twitter users with his understanding of international law.

On Thursday night, the first-term lawmaker criticized a recent rule in Vatican City that says any employee who refuses to get the COVID-19 vaccine without a valid medical reason could be fired.

As RawStory notes, Cawthorn has no medical degree, law degree, degree in religious studies, or any of a number of other accreditations that you might think would be useful when talking about this kind of thing. However, that didn’t stop him from denouncing Vatican City’s decision. Continue reading.

GOP Rep. Madison Cawthorn told a crowd before Capitol riots it had ‘fight in it.’ Now he says, ‘I don’t regret it.’

Washington Post logo

On Jan. 6, about two hours before a violent mob breached the U.S. Capitol in a deadly riot, Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) took to the stage before a fiery crowd of Trump supporters and falsely claimed that the presidential election was fraudulent.

“This crowd has some fight in it,” Cawthorn said. “The Democrats, with all the fraud they have done in this election, the Republicans hiding and not fighting, they are trying to silence your voice. Make no mistake about it, they do not want you to be heard.”

One month later, former president Donald Trump faces impeachment over his role in inciting the riot, hundreds of rioters face criminal charges, and Cawthorn faces calls for his resignation and an ethics investigation. Continue reading.

CNN Host Destroys Rep. Cawthorn With Simple Question About Election ‘Fraud’

The freshman had riled up Trump supporters ahead of the Jan. 6 riot, but now admits “the election was not fraudulent” after being challenged to back up his claims.

Two weeks after riling up a crowd of Trump supporters with claims of election fraud ahead of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, GOP Rep. Madison Cawthorn tried to rehabilitate his stance on the presidential election on Saturday night—only to have his entire argument fall apart in spectacular fashion.

Pressed by CNN’s Pamela Brown to explain what evidence had motivated him to contest the election results in the first place, Cawthorn visibly struggled to string together a coherent argument.

“The things that I was not objecting to the election on behalf of was things like Dominion voting machines changing ballots, or these U-Haul trucks pulling up filled with ballots for Joe Biden as president. The thing I was objecting for is things like, like I said in the state of Wisconsin, particularly in the town of Madison … there was an appointed official in that town who actually went against the will of the state legislature and created ballot drop boxes, which is basically ballot harvesting that was happening in the parks,” he said. Incoming congressman complains it’s hard to get Jews to stop being Jewish

And GOP leaders who claim to be concerned about antisemitism are silent.

House Republican leaders were silent on Monday after publication of an interview conducted by the Jewish Insider with Madison Cawthorn, a newly elected Republican congressman in North Carolina who made antisemitic comments about his failed effort to convert Jews to Christianity.

Cawthorn, an evangelical Christian who made headlines on Election Day for tweeting, “Cry more, lib,” after his victory over Democratic candidate Moe Davis was announced, had been asked by interviewer Matthew Kassel if he had ever tried to convert Jews.

“I have, unsuccessfully. I have switched a lot of, uh, you know, I guess, culturally Jewish people. But being a practicing Jew, like, people who are religious about it, they are very difficult,” he told the outlet. “I’ve had a hard time connecting with them in that way.” Continue reading.
