Ex-Trump campaign official Gates sentenced to 45 days in jail

The Hill logoRichard Gates, a former Trump deputy campaign chairman and top aide, on Tuesday was sentenced to 45 days in jail after pleading guilty to charges involving financial fraud and lying to federal investigators.

Gates also received three years of probation and a $20,000 fine. But he avoided a significant prison sentence thanks to the assistance he gave to prosecutors. Federal sentencing guidelines would have recommended between 46 months and 57 months in prison based on Gates’s charges.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who was appointed by former President Obama, ruled that Gates could choose to serve the jail sentence intermittently and when it’s convenient for him.  Continue reading

Ex-Trump campaign official testifies Stone gave updates on WikiLeaks email dumps

The Hill logoPresident Trump‘s former deputy campaign manager told a jury on Tuesday that Roger Stone was giving the campaign updates on WikiLeaks’s plans to release damaging emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton‘s campaign chairman.

Richard Gates, who is facing up to ten years in prison under a plea agreement for various fraud charges, testified in Stone’s criminal trial on Tuesday, saying that the longtime Trump associate was telling the campaign about WikiLeaks’s plans as early as April 2016, months before the DNC had announced it was hacked.

It had not been previously known that Stone was updating the campaign about WikiLeaks that early.

Gates agrees to testify against Manafort in Mueller probe: report

Richard Gates, a former campaign adviser for President Trump, has agreed to testify against his former associate Paul Manafort as part of a plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

The former adviser and Manafort business associate is reportedly nearing a deal with Mueller’s team and will plead guilty to fraud charges in the next few days, according to the Times.

The cottage industry of foreign lobbying is taking center stage as special counsel Robert Mueller investigates the activities of people in President Trump’s orbit.

Foreign advocacy work in Washington is common, lucrative and occasionally controversial, but has rarely received the front-page scrutiny it’s attracting now.

That’s mostly because of Paul Manafort and Richard Gates, two high-level figures from the Trump campaign who have been indicted as part of Mueller’s investigation. The charges against the two men, including allegations of money laundering, stem from work they did years ago to benefit a pro-Russia political party in Ukraine.
