Pence breaks tie to nix Obama-era consumer arbitration rule

Vice President Pence joined with Senate Republicans to nix a controversial consumer bureau rule banning companies from using forced settlements to resolve disputes with customers.

Senators voted 50-50 on the resolution of disapproval. GOP Sens. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and John Kennedy (La.) joined with Democrats to oppose cutting the Obama-era rule.

Pence then took over the presiding officer’s chair and cast the tie-breaking vote to make the total 51-50.

Senate Gives House Republicans Little Cover on Health Care in 2018

Some House GOP lawmakers trusted Senate to improve legislation

When Florida Rep. Carlos Curbelo voted for the Republican health care bill this spring, he did so believing the Senate would make it better.

“I received strong assurances that major improvements would be made in the Senate,” the two-term congressman wrote in a May Miami Herald op-edexplaining his vote.

Senate Republicans have tolerated Trump’s controversies. His treatment of Sessions is different.

Sen. John Cornyn counts Attorney General Jeff Sessions as one of his best friends in Washington, and their wives are even closer, making the couples regular double-date partners.
