Trump is a symptom of the rigged system that was already dividing us: Robert Reich

AlterNet logoAn impeached president who was on trial and is up for re-election will be delivering a state of the union address to the most divided union in living memory. He will be giving his address to both his jurors and prosecutors, and most importantly, to the voters that will decide his fate in November.

It’s not unprecedented for an impeached president to give a state of the union address. Bill Clinton delivered his State of the Union in 1999 while in the middle of his Senate trial. But that’s where the similarities end.

Clinton was not up for re-election when he gave his speech, so he didn’t need to employ any campaign-style rhetoric. Trump is a polarizing, divisive president who is addressing an America that has never been so divided. Continue reading.

PRE-SOTU FACTS: Trump Has Failed The Middle Class

Throughout his presidency, Trump has repeatedly and blatantly lied to the American people to cover up for the fact that he has failed to deliver on his promises or meaningfully improve the well-being of middle-class families.

We know tonight’s State of the Union will be no different, so here are the facts in advance on some of Trump’s most frequent and egregious lies:

TRUMP’S LIE: “The only thing I’ve done is create maybe the best economy in the history of our country.”

FACT: Last year, the stock market had its worst year since the 2008 financial crisis. Continue reading “PRE-SOTU FACTS: Trump Has Failed The Middle Class”

Pelosi tells Trump no State of the Union on Tuesday

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Wednesday she will block President Trump from delivering the State of the Union address in the House chamber until the government reopens, rejecting the president’s demand to deliver the speech on Jan. 29.

In a letter to Trump, Pelosi said she would not move forward with the legislative steps needed for the address to take place.

“The House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the president’s State of the Union address in the House chamber until government has opened,” she wrote.

The speaker asked the president to delay the address scheduled for Jan. 29 or deliver it in writing

Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to President Donald Trump on Wednesday asking he delay his Jan. 29 State of the Union address, or deliver it in writing, unless the government is reopened.

The California Democrat said a State of the Union address has never been delivered during a government shutdown “since the start of modern budgeting” in fiscal 1977. Pelosi also cited security concerns because the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security are not funded.

Wednesday marks the 26th day of the government shutdown over border security funding, the longest in modern history.

Trump ends Twitter silence with blatant lie, gets corrected by Fox News

On Tuesday evening, President Trump posted a tweet of a live stream of his State of the Union speech. He didn’t tweet again until Thursday morning, when he told a blatant lie about his speech’s audience.

“Thank you for all of the nice compliments and reviews on the State of the Union speech. 45.6 million people watched, the highest number in history,” Trump tweeted. “@FoxNews beat every other Network, for the first time ever, with 11.7 million people tuning in. Delivered from the heart!”

Thank you for all of the nice compliments and reviews on the State of the Union speech. 45.6 million people watched, the highest number in history. @FoxNews beat every other Network, for the first time ever, with 11.7 million people tuning in. Delivered from the heart!

But according to widely-shared Nielsen numbers released Wednesday, Trump’s first State of the Union was not the most watched in history.

In fact, as Fox News pointed out after Trump’s tweet, it wasn’t particularly close, with the three presidents who immediately preceded Trump each delivering State of the Union Addresses watched by more than 45.6 people.

TV Viewers:
2018: 45.6M
2017: 47.7M*
2016: 31.3M
2015: 31.7M
2014: 33.3M
2013: 33.5M
2012: 37.8M
2011: 42.8M
2010: 48.0M
2009: 52.4M*
2008: 37.5M
2007: 45.5M
2006: 41.7M
2005: 38.4M
2004: 43.4M
2003: 62.1M
1993: 66.9M* (largest TV audience)

*Not an official SOTU

The data released by Nielsen doesn’t include the number of people who streamed the speech online — but that’s also the case for previous years.

Trump’s lie about his SOTU audience is reminiscent of the one his administration pushed about his inauguration crowd size. Despite clear photographic evidence that the crowd at Trump’s inauguration was far smaller than for Obama’s, the Trump administration spent the first days of Trump’s presidency insisting that it “was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration. Period. Both in person and around the globe,” as then-Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s infamously said during his first press briefing.

It turned out that not only was Trump’s in-person inauguration crowd size smaller than Obama’s, but his TV ratings were smaller as well.

Trump lies about big things, like his claim that millions of voters cost him the popular vote (no such thing happened), and small stuff, like the penalty in China for shoplifting (it’s not 10 years in jail). His lie about his SOTU audience comes while his lawyers are trying to prevent the president from sitting down for a sworn interview with Special Counsel Robert Mueller — a setting where even small fibs could land him in legal trouble.

Coincidentally, the positive news cycle Trump sought to bask in by not tweeting on Wednesday was ruined by explosive Mueller news. On Wednesday afternoon, CNN broke news, later corroborated by other outlets, that Trump asked Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein — the official overseeing Mueller’s investigation in the DOJ — about his political allegiances during a White House meeting. In the evening, the New York Times published an explosive account about how Mueller’s team has honed in on Trump’s role in crafting a misleading statement about his campaign’s Russia connections.

Melania Trump Didn’t Stand Up When Trump Mentioned “Family & Faith,” So Yikes

The following article by Shelby Black was posted on the Elite Daily website January 31, 2018:

Well, things seemed to get pretty awkward for a minute during the 2018 State of the Union. What moment was that, might you ask? Oh, it was when First Lady Melania Trump didn’t stand when Trump discussed “faith and family” during his address. Oops.

In his State of the Union Address, Trump stated, “In America we know that faith and Family, not government and bureaucracy are the the center of Democracy.” The comment was met with a standing ovation from the crowd.

That is, all except for an actual member of his family. Cut-throat, Melania, absolutely cut-throat. Continue reading “Melania Trump Didn’t Stand Up When Trump Mentioned “Family & Faith,” So Yikes”
