Duckworth doesn’t back down following Vindman retirement

Illinois Democrat demands more information on this ‘disgraceful situation’

Sen. Tammy Duckworth will keep her hold on more than 1,100 military promotions in place despite Wednesday’s announcement of the retirement of Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a key witness in the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

The Illinois Democrat announced the hold on Thursday amid concerns that Vindman would not receive a promotion to the rank of colonel in retaliation for his testimony before the House last year.

Vindman, a former Ukraine expert to the National Security Council, was ousted from his White House job following his November testimony in which he validated many of the concerns raised by the whistleblower whose report sparked the impeachment inquiry. Continue reading.

Biden criticizes Trump camp for taking aim at Tammy Duckworth

Washington Post logoJoe Biden sharply criticized President Trump’s campaign Tuesday for attacking Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), escalating a conflict between Trump and one of Biden’s potential running mates who is a Purple Heart recipient and a double amputee.

Speaking at a virtual fundraiser that Duckworth also attended, the presumptive Democratic nominee said it was “disgusting, sickening” of Trump’s circle to question her patriotism and that it was a “reflection of the depravity of what’s going on in the White House right now.”

The back-and-forth began Sunday, when Duckworth was asked on CNN about activists’ demands that statues of George Washington be removed because he owned slaves. Duckworth replied that there should be a “national dialogue on it at some point,” and when pressed further, she added, “I think we should listen to everybody. I think we should listen to the argument there.” Continue reading.

Tucker Carlson suggests Sen. Tammy Duckworth, who lost her legs in Iraq, hates America

Washington Post logoBefore launching a broadside against Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Fox News host Tucker Carlson acknowledged that it’s not easy to go after a Purple Heart recipient who lost both her legs while serving her country in Iraq.

“You’re not supposed to criticize Tammy Duckworth in any way because she once served in the military,” Carlson said Monday night.

That didn’t stop him from calling Duckworth, a contender to be presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s running mate, “a deeply silly and unimpressive person” and suggesting that she and other Democratic leaders “actually hate America.” Continue reading.

Tammy Duckworth, the Democratic U.S. senator representing Illinois, has emerged as one of President Trump’s most pointed critics, repeatedly pushing back at his attempts to portray her party as unpatriotic.

An Army veteran who lost both her legs while serving in Iraq, Duckworth has needled Trump about his draft deferments during the Vietnam War, giving him the nickname “Cadet Bone Spurs” for the foot diagnosis that allowed him to stay out of the military.

“I will not be lectured about what our military needs by a five-deferment draft dodger,” she said on the Senate floor in January after Trump blamed Democrats for a government shutdown and accused them of holding the military hostage. Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) on Sunday doubled down on her criticism of President Trump’s rhetoric about the military, saying his history of avoiding military service prevents him from criticizing those who have served.

“I don’t think that he has the right to question other people’s support for our military, especially those of us who have served,” Duckworth said on CBS’s “Face The Nation.” Continue reading “Duckworth: Trump has no right to question others’ support for military”

Duckworth slams Trump: I won’t be lectured on military needs by a ‘five-deferment draft dodger’

The following article by Brandon Carter was posted on the Hill website January 20, 2018:

Iraq war veteran Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Il.) said she will not be lectured by President Trump, calling him a “five-deferment draft dodger” on Jan. 20.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) tore into President Trump on the Senate floor Saturday, calling him a “five-deferment draft dodger” and slamming him for his comments toward North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“Does he even know that there are service members who are in harm’s way right now, watching him, looking for their commander in chief to show leadership, rather than [trying] to deflect blame?” Duckworth said. “Or that his own Pentagon says that the short-term funding plans he seems intent on pushing is actually harmful to not just the military, but to our national security?” Continue reading “Duckworth slams Trump: I won’t be lectured on military needs by a ‘five-deferment draft dodger’”
