Twitter labels Trump post about mail ballots as ‘disputed’ and ‘misleading’

The president claimed, without evidence, there were “problems and discrepancies” with mail-in ballots “all over the USA.”

Twitter blocked a post by President Donald Trump on Monday that claimed, without evidence, there were “problems and discrepancies” with mail-in ballots “all over the USA.”

“Must have final total on November 3rd,” Trump wrote at the end of his post.

The social media company said the tweet was “disputed and might be misleading about how to participate in an election or another civic process.” Continue reading.

Trump becomes immediately defensive when a nurse reveals to him that medical supplies have been ‘sporadic’

AlterNet logoWhen President Donald Trump met with some health care professionals in the White House on Wednesday, a nurse pointed out that supplies of PPE (personal protective equipment) had been “sporadic” — inspiring Trump to become defensive and make some false claims about Barack Obama’s administration.

Sophia Thomas, the president of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners, told Trump and others, “PPE has been sporadic, but it’s been manageable. And we do what we have to do. We’re nurses, and we learn to adapt…. And that’s what we’re going to continue to do as COVID-19 continues.”

A defensive Trump told Thomas, “Sporadic for you, but not sporadic for a lot of other people.” Continue reading.

The Trump campaign’s egregious editing of a CNN clip

Washington Post logoRegular readers know that The Fact Checker has been keeping close tabs on misleading or manipulated campaign videos. We have faulted both the Biden campaign and the Trump campaign for using snippets of quotes in misleading ways or out of context.

But this Trump ad, “American Comeback,” is unusual because CNN has written a cease-and-desist letter to President Trump’s reelection campaign, saying that remarks of two of its stars have been edited to give a false impression. The network said it would refuse to air the ad. The campaign rejected the complaint, saying the ad was “demonstrably accurate.”

That’s wrong. This is yet another clear example of how campaign ad-makers twist quotes and images to leave a false impression. The ad suggests Trump’s move to restrict travel by non-U.S. citizens from China is a key factor in the United States avoiding as many as 2 million deaths during the coronavirus outbreak.

Trump’s new ad attacking Biden on China is a complete and utter mess

Washington Post logoThe big headline from a new Trump campaign ad is that it features an image suggesting that Gary Locke, former Washington governor and U.S. ambassador to China, is a member of the Chinese Communist Party. The image flashes for only a moment, but the suggestion is clear: Joe Biden is bowing deferentially to a person of Asian descent standing in front of Chinese flags. Except that the person of Asian descent is actually an American.

But that’s hardly the only way in which the ad obscures and misleads. It is a veritable smorgasbord of deception and disinformation. It attacks Biden for saying things about China that are extremely similar to what Trump himself has said. It also alters Biden’s comments about travel bans and other things to make it sound like he was saying something he did not say.

Let’s walk through it. Continue reading.
