Former GOP congressman involved with Clinton impeachment explains why Trump’s actions are ‘much more serious’ — and blasts his party for holding Obama to a different standard

AlterNet logoWith President Donald Trump facing an impeachment inquiry in the U.S. House of Representatives, journalists have been seeking the insights of those who were involved in the United States’ last two presidential impeachments: President Richard Nixon in 1973/1974 and President Bill Clinton in the last 1990s. Former Rep. Bob Inglis, a South Carolina Republican, discussed his involvement with Clinton’s impeachment during a CNN appearance this week — and he stressed that Clinton/Trump comparisons are misleading because Trump’s actions are much worse.

“The matters that is we impeached Bill Clinton for were really quite less serious than these matters,” Inglis told CNN. “These matters go right to the heart of the functioning of our government with the dealing of the president in foreign policy, and allegedly seeking political dirt on an enemy — a domestic political enemy — (and) using the levers of our government to achieve that objective. That’s a very different scenario — much more serious — than Bill Clinton’s marital infidelity.”

When Inglis was asked what he has to say to fellow Republicans who are defending Trump vigorously, the former congressman responded, “I would say to them that if you are going to keep a republic, you’ve got to keep some principles — and surely, the principle is to fairness and the rule of law. I just ask my Republican friends: if Barack Obama had done any of these things, would we have impeached him? And the answer is pretty clearly yes. In fact, we would have impeached him and removed him from office very quickly if he had done any of these things.”

Former CIA officer: Trump and his allies have a long history of bullying intelligence experts who probe Russian election interference

AlterNet logoWhen Fiona Hill, a former National Security Council (NSC) senior director specializing in Russian and European affairs, testified before the House Intelligence Committee on November 21, she stressed that there was zero evidence to support the claim that Ukraine rather than Russia interfered in the United States’ 2016 presidential election. Nonetheless, the CrowdStrike conspiracy theory persists on the far right. And journalist Alex Finley, in a report for Just Security, discusses the extremes that President Donald Trump’s allies have been willing to go to in the hope of discrediting intelligence on Russian election interference in 2016.

The CrowdStrike conspiracy theory claims that in 2016, the cyber-security firm CrowdStrike conspired with Democrats and the Ukrainian government to frame the Russian government for interfering in the presidential election. According to the false claim that the Ukrainian government — not Russian President Vladimir Putin — was the real villain in 2016, Finley notes, “Trump never could have colluded with Russia, because Russia never did anything wrong.” And Finley notes that Attorney General William Barr has been investigating people in the U.S. intelligence community who have been part of the Russia investigation — and appointed federal prosecutor John Dunham to head that investigation.

Finley explains, “Last month, media outlets reported that Barr’s investigation had become a criminal one. Whether true or not, the claim — much like the public attacks from Trump, Republicans and the conservative media ecosystem —  seemed like a clear signal to civil servants — whether in the FBI, the CIA or the NSA — to tread very carefully if they planned to take any actions that came anywhere near the Russia-Trump nexus again.”

Rudy Giuliani was ‘unraveling at the seams’ during recent Fox News interview: presidential historian

AlterNet logoAppearing on CNN’s “New Day” early Sunday morning, noted presidential historian Douglas Brinkley marveled at the continued appearances by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani in support of Donald Trump calling it a “weird dog and pony show” being put on by the two.

Speaking with hosts Victor Blackwell and Christi Paul, Brinkley noted that Giuliani — who appeared on Fox News on Saturday and made a veiled threat at Trump — appears to be “unraveling.”

Asked by host Paul about Giuliani’s relationship with the president, the historian said it is not unusual for presidents sometimes to have an alter ego to speak for them.

Trump’s GOP support hardens despite damning impeachment testimony

Washington Post logoAfter two weeks of extraordinary open hearings that Democrats envisioned as their best opportunity to shape public opinion on impeachment, President Trump claims to be impervious to the cascade of damaging revelations because of hardening Republican opposition to his removal from office.

So far, the historic proceedings have exacerbated the political divide. Some moderate Republican lawmakers once seen as the most likely to break with Trump condemned his conduct but signaled in recent days that they would probably vote against his impeachment because they do not believe the president’s actions meet that threshold.

This phase of the inquiry was particularly damning for Trump, simply because of the fact pattern that emerged. A series of government witnesses, testifying under oath and at risk of perjury, implicated the president in a scheme to pressure Ukraine to influence the 2020 election.

Democrats set to open new chapter in impeachment

The Hill logoAfter a two-week barrage of public hearings, Democrats are eyeing the next stage of their impeachment inquiry as they edge closer to an end-of-year goal for wrapping up their investigation into President Trump’s dealings with Ukraine.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and other Democrats on the panel finished their last scheduled public hearings this week with what sounded like closing arguments for impeachment.

Schiff said lawmakers will determine their next steps “in the coming days.”

Trump goes off the rails in Fox News interview spewing Obama conspiracy theory

AlterNet logoPresident Donald Trump went off-the-rails when he called in to “Fox & Friends” Friday morning. For 57 minutes straight with no commercials the fast-talking President spewed conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory, tossed around lies and personal attacks against top Democrats, including coming close to saying once again that President Barack Obama spied on him and his campaign.

“They thought I was going to win and said ‘how can we stop him?’” Trump said of Obama and his administration.

“You’re dealing at the highest levels of government. They were spying on my campaign. This is my opinion,” Trump said.

Nunes Dumbfounded When Witness Debunks His Conspiracy Theory

House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes was caught off guard on Thursday when a witness in the impeachment hearings rejected a favorite right-wing conspiracy out of hand. It was an amusing and revealing moment showing how deep Nunes is in the alternative reality crafted by President Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, outlets like Fox News, and others.

The moment came when he asked State Department official David Holmes about the so-called “black ledger,” which documented payments former Trump Campaign Chair Paul Manafort received from former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. When the ledger was revealed in 2016, it prompted Manafort’s removal from the campaign, and Republicans have alleged that it was part of a plot by the country to hurt Trump. During his questioning, Nunes asked if Holmes had heard of the “black ledger.” Holmes said he had.

Holmes, who works at the U.S. embassy in Ukraine, replied simply: “Yes.”

Nunes was clearly taken aback.

Senate Impeachment ‘Jurors’ Dining With Trump

Many Senate Republicans have dodged questions about the impeachment inquiry into Donald Trump, saying that they are staying neutral because they will likely be “jurors” in any impeachment trial.

But according to a Politico report on Thursday, Trump has been hosting many of these same prospective “jurors” for a series of group lunches, part of an “intense outreach” in advance of possible impeachment.

With a public that narrowly approves of the inquiry into Trump’s potentially illegal behavior and a GOP base that strongly opposes it, several Republican senators have punted on questions, noting that they might have to be impartial jurors.

Fiona Hill Testifies ‘Fictions’ on Ukraine Pushed by Trump Help Russia

New York Times logoThe former top White House aide denounced a theory that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 election, as she tied the president’s pressure campaign to Russian efforts to sow political divisions in America.

WASHINGTON — A former White House Russia expert on Thursday sharply denounced a “fictional narrative” embraced by President Trump and his Republican allies that Ukraine, not Russia, interfered in the 2016 election, testifying that the claim was a fabrication by Moscow that had harmed the United States.

The expert, Fiona Hill, tied a pressure campaign on Ukraine by Mr. Trump and some of his top aides to an effort by Russia to sow political divisions in the United States and undercut American diplomacy. She warned Republicans that legitimizing an unsubstantiated theory that Kyiv undertook a concerted campaign to interfere in the election — a claim the president pushed repeatedly for Ukraine to investigate — played into Russia’s hands.

“In the course of this investigation,” Dr. Hill testified before the House Intelligence Committee’s impeachment hearings, “I would ask that you please not promote politically driven falsehoods that so clearly advance Russian interests.”

Adam Schiff summarizes Trump’s Ukraine Plan with just 7 Words

AlterNet logoIn case you missed it, Adam Schiff closed out the pivotal day with one memorable theme, regarding Trump’s action with respect to Ukraine:

“That’s not anti-corruption, that is corruption.”

He repeated the theme again and again, citing one Trump ‘high crime’ after another to illustrate his refrain.
