‘The president’s scheme unraveled’: Here are some highlights from the House Intel Committee’s impeachment report

AlterNet logoFollowing an abundance of testimony, the House Intelligence Committee has released a detailed, in-depth impeachment report — which lays a strong case for impeaching President Donald Trump.

In the report, House Intelligence notes that Trump “pressed” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to “do a political favor.”

“President Zelensky followed this advice during his conversation with President Trump,” the report notes. “President Zelensky assured that he would pursue the investigations that President Trump had discussed — into the Bidens and 2016 election interference — and, in turn, pressed for the White House meeting that remained outstanding. Trump’s representatives, according to the report, “ratcheted up pressure” on Zelensky — and the report goes on to say that Ukrainians “inquired about the president’s hold on security assistance.”

BREAKING: House Intelligence releases impeachment findings

The Hill logoDemocrats on the House Intelligence Committee released a lengthy memo Tuesday detailing their weeks of evidence-gathering as part of the impeachment inquiry, in which they claim President Trump abused the power of his office.

“The evidence is clear that President Trump used the power of his office to pressure Ukraine into announcing investigations into his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, and a debunked conspiracy theory that it was Ukraine, not Russia, that interfered in the 2016 election. These investigations were designed to benefit his 2020 presidential reelection campaign,” three House Democratic chairs said in a statement.

The report, which the Intelligence panel is poised to transmit to the House Judiciary Committee, lays out details that Democrats hope will boost their case as they seek to argue President Trump is unfit for office. They are primarily, if not entirely, resting their case on the claims Trump used the most powerful office in the world to press Ukraine to open to investigations that would benefit him politically.

The Hill logoHouse Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) told Democratic lawmakers on Monday that the committees overseeing the impeachment inquiry are preparing a report for the House Judiciary Committee that they hope to send shortly after members return from their one-week Thanksgiving recess.

In a “Dear Colleague” letter sent to members of the House Democratic Caucus, Schiff said the House Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Oversight and Reform committees continue to investigate President Trump. He did not rule out the possibility of additional hearings or depositions.

But he also said investigators did not want to allow the administration to delay their probe through court challenges.
