University of Florida students protest Trump Jr. visit: ‘What has he really done except get handouts from his father?’

AlterNet logoIt was obvious how much a swing state Florida is when Democratic Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum barely lost the 2018 gubernatorial race to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, and the deep political divisions in the Sunshine State were evident again at the University of Florida this week because of a visit by the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr.

On October 3, free tickets for an event at the campus’ University Auditorium featuring Trump Jr. and girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle (a senior adviser for Trump’s reelection campaign) became available, and Trump opponents launched a protest they dubbed  #CHOMPTRUMP. Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle were booked by ACCENT, which is part of the UF student government.

Evelyn Graham, one of the student protestors, is quoted by WUFT as saying, “ACCENT’s excuse is that Trump Jr. is going to be speaking about entrepreneurship when in reality, what has he really done except get handouts from his father?”

Democratic senator: Trump Jr. meeting with Gulf emissary ‘absolutely crazy’

The following article by Max Greenwood was posted on the Hill website May 19, 2018:

Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) dubbed the Trump campaign “absolutely crazy” after The New York Times reported on Saturday that President Trump‘s eldest son met with a Gulf emissary in 2016 who offered to help the real estate mogul win the presidency.

“To be fair this is pretty standard for a Presidential campaign,” Schatz tweeted, referencing a Vox article about the Times’s reporting. “I’m kidding. It’s absolutely crazy.”The tweet came hours after the Times reported that Donald Trump Jr. met in August 2016 with Joel Zamel, an Israeli political strategist specializing in social media manipulation, and George Nader, a Lebanese-American businessman and a self-styled emissary to the crown princes of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.  Continue reading “Democratic senator: Trump Jr. meeting with Gulf emissary ‘absolutely crazy’”

WASHINGTON — Three months before the 2016 election, a small group gathered at Trump Tower to meet with Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son. One was an Israeli specialist in social media manipulation. Another was an emissary for two wealthy Arab princes. The third was a Republican donor with a controversial past in the Middle East as a private security contractor.

The meeting was convened primarily to offer help to the Trump team, and it forged relationships between the men and Trump insiders that would develop over the coming months — past the election and well into President Trump’s first year in office, according to several people with knowledge of their encounters. WASHINGTON — Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, is set to meet with Senate Judiciary Committee investigators behind closed doors on Thursday to answer questions about his June 2016 meeting with a Kremlin-connected lawyer, committee officials said.

Committee aides said the interview, Mr. Trump’s first with congressional investigators, will be transcribed and could last for much of the day. It will largely focus on the meeting in Trump Tower, which appears to have been set up to deliver harmful information about Hillary Clinton to the Trump campaign, according to emails disclosed in June.

Democrats, led by Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, the committee’s top-ranking Democrat, said on Wednesday that Mr. Trump had also agreed to testify at a public hearing before the committee and that he would probably be subpoenaed if he did not follow through on that agreement. Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, the panel’s chairman, declined to discuss the committee’s dealings with Mr. Trump. Lawyers for Mr. Trump could not be reached for comment.

The closed-door interview is the clearest indication yet that the Senate Judiciary Committee — after months of being eclipsed by the Senate and House intelligence committees — is emerging into a higher-profile role in investigating the president, his family and his associates in the coming months.
