‘Stealth bailout’: Big Oil taking $1.9 billion in CARES Act tax breaks aimed at helping small businesses

AlterNet logoSen. Bernie Sanders was among critics outraged that the fossil fuel industry is using tax breaks in the CARES Act meant to help businesses keep workers employed to avoid paying millions of dollars in taxes—and then delivering that money to executives.

“Good thing President Trump is looking out for the real victims of the coronavirus: fossil fuel executives,” Sanders tweeted sarcastically Friday.

Reporting Friday from Bloomberg News showed that “$1.9 billion in CARES Act tax benefits are being claimed by at least 37 oil companies, service firms, and contractors”—what watchdog group Documented senior researcher  Jesse Coleman described as a “stealth bailout” of the climate-killing industry. President Donald Trump is spending the holidays at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, continuing a pattern that has created questions of conflicts of interest.

Trump began his day at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, then headed to his nearby golf club, according to a White House pool report. This marks his 85th day at a golf club and 111th day at a Trump-owned property since taking office, according to NBC News, which is among several news organizations that have tracked the president’s time visiting his golf clubs and hotels. Mnuchin’s military flights exceed $800K

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin‘s flights on military aircraft since March have cost $800,000, according to a report from the department’s inspector general.

The secretary has made nine requests to use military aircraft since assuming his position in the administration earlier this year, including a request for when he travels to the Middle East this month.
