Today’s WorldView: Not that kind of leader

The following article by Ishaan Tharoor was posted on the Washington Post website March 28, 2017:

“An analogy is haunting the United States,” writes American political scientist Sheri Berman, “the analogy of fascism.”

Before last year’s election — and even in the months since President Trump took office — many observers wrung their hands over how to understand the politics that fueled his rise. Sure, there are obvious distinctions to be made; nobody invoking the “analogy” seriously believes the hideous slaughters of another era are imminent. We Redacted Everything That’s Not a Verifiably True Statement From Trump’s Time Interview About Truth

This is so telling, if people are willing to give it some attention.

The following article by Ellie Shechet was posted on the Jezebel website March 23, 2017:

President Trump recently participated in an interview with Time Magazine’s Michael Scherer for a cover story about his relationship with the truth. Predictably, this conversation really tested the limits of irony.

In the full transcript of the interview published by Time, Trump lies a lot, says a number of half-true things, does not admit he was incorrect to link Ted Cruz’s father with Lee Harvey Oswald, foists responsibility for his inaccuracies onto media reports that he misrepresents, says the word “Brexit” 11 times, and forms sentences like “Brussels, I said, Brussels is not Brussels.” But, listen, some of it was fine! In the transcript below, we have redacted everything that is not verifiably true. What remains is everything the president said that is definitely true. The truth about Obama’s economic legacy and Trump’s inheritance

President Donald Trump has been trashing the economy and his predecessor’s legacy lately.

For example, in his free-wheeling Feb. 16 press conference, Trump said he “inherited a mess” from President Barack Obama. His newly minted Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin followed suit a week later by telling the Wall Street Journal that Obama’s policies are to blame for the slower-than-normal growth the U.S. has experienced since the financial crisis in 2008.

While you wouldn’t know it from the way the Trump team has been talking about it, the economy is actually in pretty good shape. The current economic expansion just became the third-longest on record. The economy has been adding jobs every month for more than six years, the longest winning streak since World War II. And the federal budget deficit has sharply declined from a high of 9.8 percent of GDP in the middle of the Great Recession to a manageable 3.2 percent last year. Joe Scarborough: Trump’s dangerous lie about Russia

The following commentary by Joe Scarborough was posted on the Washington Post website February 7, 2017:

President Trump’s claim that America is morally on parwith Russia’s corrupt dystopian regime was so historically ignorant that even timid Republicans felt compelled to speak out this week. Perhaps that is because remaining silent in the face of such a morally disorienting claim would make them look like fools. Vladimir Putin is, after all, the same ruthless autocrat who kills journalists and political rivals who cross his path. He is also the same man who called the Soviet Union’s collapse “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.”

The evil empire Putin admires says much about the tyrant our new president defends. Burning with resentments carried over from a fallen empire, Comrade Putin hopes to rebuild the U.S.S.R. one invasion at a time. And while Putin pursues that delusional dream, Trump should be reminded exactly what kind of world his new friend wants to create. Politifact: Fact-checked: Trump’s claim that media doesn’t report terrorist attacks

The following email from Angie Holan, the PolitiFact Editor:

We were watching President Donald Trump address the military in Tampa when we heard him make this claim about the media:

“Radical Islamic terrorists are determined to strike our homeland as they did on 9/11, as they did from Boston to Orlando, to San Bernardino and all across Europe,” Trump said. “You’ve seen what happened in Paris and Nice. All over Europe, it’s happening. It’s gotten to a point where it’s not even being reported, and in many cases, the very, very dishonest press doesn’t want to report it. They have their reasons, and you understand that.” Continue reading “Politifact: Fact-checked: Trump’s claim that media doesn’t report terrorist attacks”

Trump makes false statement about U.S. murder rate to sheriffs’ group

The following article by Tom Jackman was posted on the Washington Post website February 7, 2017:

President Trump falsely claimed that “the murder rate in our country is the highest it’s been in 47 years,” during a meeting with county sheriffs on Feb. 7 at the White House. (Photo: Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post)

President Trump met Tuesday morning with a group of sheriffs from the National Sheriffs Association, a group that consists of more than 3,000 sheriffs from around the country. And to this sworn group of  law enforcement veterans, with reporters taking notes, he again repeated a falsehood about the murder rate in America.

Trump told the sheriffs, “the murder rate in our country is the highest it’s been in 47 years.” He blamed the news media for not publicizing this development, then added, “But the murder rate is the highest it’s been in, I guess, 45 to 47 years.” Continue reading “Trump makes false statement about U.S. murder rate to sheriffs’ group”

Documents confirm Trump still benefiting from his business

Before taking office, President Trump promised to place his assets in a trust designed to erect a wall between him and the businesses that made him wealthy.

But newly released documents show that Trump himself is the sole beneficiary of the trust and that it is legally controlled by his oldest son and a longtime employee.

The documents, obtained through a public records request by the investigative news service ProPublica and first reported by the New York Times, also show that Trump retains the legal power to revoke the trust at any time.

The documents were filed to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board in Washington to alert the board that oversees liquor licenses at Trump’s D.C. hotel of the change in the business. Continue reading “Documents confirm Trump still benefiting from his business”

Trump’s claim taking credit for cutting $600 million from the F-35 program

The following article by Michelle Ye Hee Lee was posted on the Washington Post website January 31, 2017:

“But we cut approximately $600 million off the F-35 fighter, and that only amounts to 90 planes out of close to 3,000 planes. And when you think about $600 million, it was announced by Marillyn, who’s very talented, the head of Lockheed Martin. I got involved in that about a month ago. A lot was put out, and when they say a lot, a lot meant about 90 planes. They were having a lot of difficulty. There was no movement and I was able to get $600 million approximately off those planes.”
— President Trump, remarks to the press, Jan. 30, 2017

Trump met privately with Lockheed Martin chief executive Marillyn Hewson, following his pre-inauguration criticism in December of the company and the cost of F-35 Joint Strike Fighter planes. Then, in a Jan. 30, 2017, meeting, Trump announced a dramatic cut of $600 million from the program. Is that correct? Trump’s unsupported claim he has ‘received awards on the environment’

The following article by Michelle Ye Hee Lee was posted on the Washington Post website January 24, 2014:

“I’m a very big person when it comes to the environment. I have received awards on the environment.”
— President Trump, remarks during a meeting with business leaders, Jan. 23

One of Donald Trump’s first proposals as president is to help businesses by cutting regulations by 75 percent. Trump cited environmental regulations as an example during a meeting with business leaders, but claimed he was a “very big person” on the environment who has “received awards on the environment.” Continue reading “Trump’s unsupported claim he has ‘received awards on the environment’”
