Leaked video: GOP Senate candidate told black leaders it’s pointless to call out Trump racism

AlterNet logoJohn James, the Republican nominee for a U.S. Senate seat in Michigan, privately told African-American leaders in the state that it was pointless to publicly call out President Donald Trump’s racist statements — shortly before he publicly criticized former Vice President Joe Biden for “hurtful” remarks he made about black voters.

“When I do talk about a prosperity agenda, that’s the goal, is achieving equity and equality for our people, not standing up on Twitter and condemning folks,” James said in a leaked video obtained by Salon, in response to a question about why he had not spoken out about the president’s racist rhetoric. “We’ve had our minds twisted to believe that speaking out is tantamount to fixing things.” Continue reading.

How Trump aides rushed to repackage the ‘go back’ tweets

Over the course of 24 hours, the Trump campaign tried to repackage the attack as a broader patriotic message.

Within hours of President Donald Trump’s radioactive tweets on Sunday urging several Democratic congresswomen to “go back” to other countries, his campaign was scrambling to repackage the attack on the four women of color into a broader patriotic message.

By Sunday night, the campaign was portraying Trump as a defender of American pride. “President Trump loves this country [and] doesn’t like it when elected officials constantly disparage it,” said Tim Murtaugh, communications director for Trump’s reelection operation.

By Monday morning, the campaign’s rapid response director and Trump himself were branding the congresswomen as dangerous ideologues, retweeting Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham’s accusations that the congresswomen were “a bunch of communists.”

Fox News’ John Roberts tells Trump to his face: ‘White nationalist groups are finding common cause with you’

AlterNet logoFox News reporter John Roberts asked President Donald Trump to his face whether he cared that white nationalists agreed with his views on race.

The president provoked widespread outrage by calling on four Democratic congresswomen — all women of color — to leave the country because they disagreed with his policies, and Trump insisted his tweets were not racist while continuing to lob bigoted attacks at them.

“Mr. President,” Roberts asked during an impromptu Monday news conference, “does it concern you that many people saw that tweet as racist, and that white nationalist groups are finding common cause with you on that point?”

Trump steps up attacks on minority congresswomen

The Hill logoPresident Trump on Monday stepped up his attacks on four progressive, minority Democratic lawmakers, which were widely condemned by Democrats — and some Republicans — as racist and unbecoming of an American president.

One day after Trump said the four women should “go back” to their home countries, even though all are U.S. citizens, the president denied he was being racist and expressed no remorse when told that white nationalist groups found common cause with his message.

“It doesn’t concern me because many people agree with me,” Trump told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House during an event highlighting American manufacturing.

Pelosi announces House resolution to condemn Trump’s ‘xenophobic tweets’

The Hill logoSpeaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Monday urged House Democrats to support a resolution to condemn President Trump for tweeting that four Democratic congresswomen of color should “go back” to their countries, even though all are U.S. citizens.

“The House cannot allow the President’s characterization of immigrants to our country to stand. Our Republican colleagues must join us in condemning the President’s xenophobic tweets,” Pelosi wrote in a letter to House Democrats announcing a “forthcoming” resolution from Reps. Tom Malinowski (D-N.J.), who was born in Poland, Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), and other Democratic members who were born abroad.

“This weekend, the President went beyond his own low standards using disgraceful language about Members of Congress,” Pelosi added. “Rather than attack Members of Congress, he should work with us for humane immigration policy that reflects American values.”

DFL Repeats Call for Minnesota GOP to Denounce Trump’s Blatant Racism

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Yesterday, Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party Chairman Ken Martin called on top Minnesota Republicans to denounce President Trump’s multiple, racist attacks on Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar. Thus far, they have refused to do so.

Today, in response to Republican silence, Martin released the following statement:

“Courage should not be a partisan issue. Standing up to racism should not be a partisan issue. It’s past time for Minnesota Republicans to put politics aside and do what is right for our country by denouncing Trump’s racist attacks on Representative Ilhan Omar. Trump Fans the Flames of a Racial Fire

New York Times logoWASHINGTON — President Trump woke up on Sunday morning, gazed out at the nation he leads, saw the dry kindling of race relations and decided to throw a match on it. It was not the first time, nor is it likely to be the last. He has a pretty large carton of matches and a ready supply of kerosene.

His Twitter harangue goading Democratic congresswomen of color to “go back” to the country they came from, even though most of them were actually born in the United States, shocked many. But it should have surprised few who have watched the way he has governed a multicultural, multiracial country the last two and a half years.

When it comes to race, Mr. Trump plays with fire like no other president in a century. While others who occupied the White House at times skirted close to or even over the line, finding ways to appeal to the resentments of white Americans with subtle and not-so-subtle appeals, none of them in modern times fanned the flames as overtly, relentlessly and even eagerly as Mr. Trump.

‘Breathtakingly racist’: Internet scorches Trump over his tweets attacking Democratic lawmakers

AlterNet logoCommenters on Twitter were quick to condemn President Donald Trump on Sunday morning after he encouraged unnamed foreign-born “Progressive” Democratic lawmakers to go back to their “corrupt” places of birth and fix the problems there instead of criticizinbg the job he is doing.

Trump’s comments come the day after Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MI)[sic] — who was born in Somalia — criticized the president’s immigration policies.

As one commenter offered, Trump’s tweets were “pure racism.”

Trump tells progressive congresswomen to ‘go back’ where they came from

The Hill logoPresident Trump on Sunday lashed out at a group of progressive Democrats, saying the female lawmakers should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came” before criticizing policies in the U.S.

“So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run,” Trump said in an early morning string of tweets.

Donald Trump Doubles Down on Racist Slander

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump latest racist attack on Representative Omar:

“This is a dark day for America and a stain on the office of the President of the United States. It’s frightening to witness President Donald Trump repeating racist falsehoods from the darkest corners of the internet designed to inspire hatred and sow divisions in our country.

“Donald Trump accusing Representative Ilhan Omar of supporting Al Qaeda is completely disgusting, astonishingly racist and obviously false. Omar is a proud American Congresswoman who has devoted her life to public service and has sworn an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.
