Biden eyes inroads with evangelical voters

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is seeking to make inroads with evangelical voters, a demographic that overwhelmingly sided with President Trump during the 2016 election.

Team Biden doesn’t think it can win over all evangelicals or even a majority, but it does think it can slice off some of them from Trump’s coalition by emphasizing the former vice president’s personal faith and values.

At the Democratic National Convention, Biden’s campaign will hold an interfaith service on Aug. 16, and a Believers for Biden watch party ahead of the candidate’s acceptance speech is set for Aug. 20, according to a Biden adviser. Continue reading.

Kamala Harris, Daughter of Immigrants, Is the Face of America’s Demographic Shift

New York Times logo

Her parents’ arrival to Berkeley as young graduate students was the beginning of a historic wave of immigration from outside Europe that would change the United States in ways its leaders never imagined.

When Kamala Harris’s mother left India for California in 1958, the percentage of Americans who were immigrants was at its lowest point in over a century.

That was about to change.

Her arrival at Berkeley as a young graduate student — and that of another student, an immigrant from Jamaica whom she would marry — was the beginning of a historic wave of immigration from outside Europe that would transform the United States in ways its leaders never imagined. Now, the American-born children of these immigrants — people like Ms. Harris — are the face of this country’s demographic future.

Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s choice of Ms. Harris as his running mate has been celebrated as a milestone because she is the first Black woman and the first of Indian descent in American history to be on a major party’s presidential ticket. But her selection also highlights a remarkable shift in this country: the rise of a new wave of children of immigrants, or second-generation Americans, as a growing political and cultural force, different from any that has come before. In ‘Buy American’ Speech, Biden Challenges Trump on the Economy

New York Times logoJoseph R. Biden Jr. laid out a populist economic vision with the tagline “Build Back Better,” part of an effort to confront President Trump on his strongest issue in polling.

Joseph R. Biden Jr. laid out a populist economic vision to revive and reinvest in American manufacturing on Thursday, calling for major new spending and stricter new rules to “Buy American” as part of an effort to more aggressively challenge President Trumpon two of his signature issues: the economy and nationalism.

In a speech in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, Mr. Bidenlacerated Mr. Trump for a bungled response to the coronavirus pandemic that has deepened the economic crisis and a misplaced focus on the stock market, while framing his own economic agenda around a new campaign tagline, “Build Back Better.”

In some ways, Mr. Biden was seizing the “Buy American” message from Mr. Trump himself, who campaigned on an “America First” agenda in 2016 and wrote on Twitter on his Inauguration Day that “Buy American” and “Hire American” were “two simple rules” that would guide his administration. Joe Biden: How the White House coronavirus response presents us with a false choice

Washington Post logoThe coronavirus, to date, has taken the lives of more than 79,000 Americans. One of every 5 U.S. workers has filed for unemployment — with the unemployment rate now the highest since the Great Depression. It is an extraordinary moment — the kind that begs for urgent, steady, empathetic, unifying leadership.

But instead of unifying the country to accelerate our public health response and get economic relief to those who need it, President Trump is reverting to a familiar strategy of deflecting blame and dividing Americans. His goal is as obvious as it is craven: He hopes to split the country into dueling camps, casting Democrats as doomsayers hoping to keep America grounded and Republicans as freedom fighters trying to liberate the economy.

It’s a childish tactic — and a false choice that none of us should fall for. Continue reading.

Warren endorses Biden for president

The Hill logoSen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) formally endorsed Joe Biden on Wednesday, making her the last of the former vice president’s onetime rivals to back him as the Democratic presidential nominee.

The Massachusetts senator and former presidential candidate announced her endorsement in an email to supporters, saying there was “too much at stake” to hold out any longer.

“Joe Biden has spent nearly his entire life in public service,” Warren said. “He knows that a government run with integrity, competence, and heart will save lives and save livelihoods. And we can’t afford to let Donald Trump continue to endanger the lives and livelihoods of every American.” Continue reading.

Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. took the stage at House Democrats’ retreat on Wednesday to cheers of “Let’s go, Joe!” and a solitary cheer of, “Run Joe, run!”

He dismissed the remark, but told the room he’ll do whatever he can to help Democrats win the House majority in November.

“We have a real opportunity to take back the House,” Biden said, before suggesting there’s a chance Democrats could flip the Senate, too.

Democrats need to gain 24 seats to win a House majority. Democrats must pick up two Senate seats, but are currently defending 10 seats in states President Donald Trump won in 2016. Continue reading “Biden Gives Midterm Pep Talk at Rebooted Retreat”

Biden: If I were Trump’s lawyer, I would advise against Mueller interview

The following article by Rebecca Morin was posted on the Politico website February 6, 2018:

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday said President Donald Trump has “some difficulty with precision” and that he would tell him to not consent to an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller.

“You are in a situation where the President has some difficulty with precision,” Biden told Chris Cuomo on CNN. “One of the things I would worry about if I were his lawyer is him saying something that was simply not true without him even planning to be disingenuous.” Continue reading “Biden: If I were Trump’s lawyer, I would advise against Mueller interview”

Joe Biden Says Donald Trump Makes The World Dangerous

The following article by Matthew Cooper of Newsweek was posted on the National Memo website October 18, 2017:

Former Vice President Joe Biden took aim at Donald Trump on Tuesday, saying that the president “doesn’t understand governance” and claimed that one European prime minister had told him that the mogul reminds him of Mussolini, the Italian Fascist.

The 74-year-old made his comments at a University of Delaware bipartisanship forum alongside 2016 GOP presidential candidate John Kasich, who has also been critical of the president. Continue reading “Joe Biden Says Donald Trump Makes The World Dangerous”
