Trump and Iran

Monday morning in an all caps tweet, Trump foolishly threatened Iran with war over Twitter.  He is once again playing games with America’s national security and making the world less safe.  He is manufacturing another crisis, at a time when we are already facing increasing isolation from the international community.

Remember, it was Donald Trump and his administration that abandoned the Iran deal.  He sacrificed our security to satisfy his political base. The facts show that the Iran Deal was working, and the entire international community is a better place for it.

The Iran Deal reduced the nuclear threat, and is undoubtedly in the best interests of both the United States and the international community at-large. The facts and evidence show that the Iran Deal was working:

  • Iran saw a roughly 95% reduction of their uranium stockpile.

  • Iran dismantled roughly 13,000 centrifuges and stored them under monitoring by the IAEA.

  • Iran disabled a heavy-water nuclear reactor capable of producing weapons-grade plutonium.

Trump is likely using Twitter’s 280 characters for a quick and easy distraction.  Let’s not forget that the “dealmaker” president is reeling from foreign affairs fumbles with the dictators of North Korea and Russia.

Trump’s Twitter tirade and his decision to walk away from the Iran deal send a message to the world that America isn’t serious about keeping its commitments. Breaking this promise to our international partners only serves to weaken our global standing and further isolate us from our allies.
