GOP’s Devin Nunes once again questions social distancing measures despite repeated warnings from experts

AlterNet logoRep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., argued Tuesday that it was “way overkill” for California to keep schools closed for the rest of the academic year in order to combat the spread of the new coronavirus.

Nunes, who previously urged Americans to go out to their local restaurants and pubs amid the pandemic, argued that schools should reopen within weeks rather than months during an appearance on Fox News.

“The schools were just canceled out here in California, which is way overkill,” Nunes said. “I mean, it’s possible the kids could have went back to school in two weeks, four weeks. But they just canceled the rest of the schools.” Continue reading.

Devin Nunes’s bad cleanup effort after his coronavirus comments

Washington Post logoBut he’s not the only one struggling to explain after urging people to go to bars and restaurants

President Trump on Monday changed his rhetoric on the coronavirus while straining hard not to admit he had undersold the threat. Asked about his past comments that the situation was under control, Trump tried to maintain he meant the response was under control, not the virus itself.

But he’s not the only one refusing to admit he gave people dodgy advice.

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) on Sunday morning urged people to go to bars and restaurants, even while Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious-disease expert, was on other shows urging the opposite. Trump then on Monday echoed Fauci, saying the administration was urging people to “avoid discretionary travel and avoid eating and drinking at bars, restaurants and public food courts.” Continue reading.

Rep. Devin Nunes recommended going out despite the coronavirus. Do the opposite.

Listen to coronavirus experts, not elected officials who claim “it’s a great time to just go out.”

President Donald Trump minimized concerns about the novel coronavirus at a Sunday press conference, telling Americans to “relax” — and many of his conservative allies are doing the same, giving the public the sort of advice that could endanger lives as the pandemic progresses.

Rep. Devin Nunes, who fiercely defended the president during the impeachment inquiry as the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, appeared on Fox Business’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo Sunday, and encouraged people to go out and patronize local businesses, despite that running counter to experts’ advice.

“There’s a lot of concerns with the economy here, because people are scared to go out,” Nunes said. “But I will just say, one of the things you can do, if you’re healthy, you and your family — it’s a great time to just go out: go to a local restaurant, likely you can get in easily. … Go to your local pub.” Continue reading.

Trump picks loyalist who helped Nunes hype bogus Obama wiretap claim for top NSC intel position

AlterNet logoIn contrast to all the U.S. presidents who were very reliant on their advisers, President Donald Trump has shown a strong preference for unquestioning loyalists — and he has been surrounding himself with them in recent months, from Attorney General William Barr to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. A recent loyalist addition to Team Trump, according to Politico reporters Natasha Bertrand and Daniel Lippman, is Michael Ellis, now senior director of intelligence on the National Security Council (NSC).

Ellis is known for his work as a deputy to White House attorney John Eisenberg and as a counsel to the House Intelligence Committee when it was still being chaired by Rep. Devin Nunes (a far-right California Republican and strident Trump ally). He and Ezra Cohen-Watnick, who now serves as national security adviser to United States Attorney General, were the two White House officials who gave Nunes intelligence reports purporting to show that former officials in President Barack Obama’s administration improperly “unmasked” members of the Trump transition team. Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC), later said the unsmasking narrative was “all created by Devin Nunes.”

Ellis’ name, Bertrand and Lippman note, has also been heard in connection with the Ukraine scandal: according to Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman — who Trump fired from the NSC after being acquitted by the U.S. Senate on two articles of impeachment — it was Ellis and Eisenberg who decided to move the record of Trump’s now-infamous July 25 phone conservation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into a top-secret NSC server. House Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, argued that Trump committed an impeachable offense when, that day, he tried to pressure Zelensky into investigating former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. Devin Nunes’ income called into question as watchdog groups asks for investigation of his finances

AlterNet logoAccording to a report from the Fresno Bee,the non-partisan Campaign Legal Center is requesting a federal investigation into whether U.S. Representative Devin Nunes (R-CA) is receiving legal services in violation of House ethics rules.

Over the past year, the conservative Republicans has launched a handful of lawsuits against critics — including the McClatchy newspaper chain and a person on Twitter purporting to be one of his cows.

According to the Bee, “The complaint says Nunes appears to be in ‘blatant violation of House rules,’ because he would have trouble paying for all these lawsuits solely from his congressional salary of $174,000 per year. The group argues he’d only be able to pay if he received legal services for free, at a discounted rate, or based on a contingency fee, meaning the lawyer would get compensated from Nunes’ winnings if he prevails in his lawsuits.” Continue reading.

Devin Nunes Mentioned Nude Trump Pics Again And People Have Questions

The California Republican just keeps bringing it up. Why?

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) has once again mentioned hypothetical nude pictures of President Donald Trump and Twitter users are wondering just why the lawmaker ― a close Trump ally ― is so obsessed.

Nunes has repeatedly referred to the pics and did so again on Thursday night during an interview on Fox News:

Nunes, who is currently suing a parody cow account on Twitter, is likely referring to a phone call made to Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) by Russian pranksters, one of whom was posing as a member of the Ukrainian parliament. The pranksters claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin possessed compromising materials on Trump, including nude pictures. Continue reading.

Nunes raked over the coals for claim Democrats don’t understand ‘importance’ of paper ballots after voting against them himself

AlterNet logoRep. Devin Nunes weighed in on the Iowa Caucuses debacle with a partisan and uninformed “hot take.” The Republican California Congressman who’s very close to the White House and President Donald Trump posted a tweet suggesting Democrats didn’t have a paper backup system for Monday’s first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses.

Too bad Dem/Socialists/Media didn’t read House Republican report on the importance of using paper ballots for election security…

It’s false to suggest there was no paper backup system. In fact, the caucus counting system is done largely on paper, and there is a paper backup system. The digital problem was reportedly with miscoding in a new app Iowa decided to use. Results are promised for later today.

“Iowa Democrats for the first time enacted a new ‘preference card’ system in which caucus-goers wrote down their choice for president. This created an unprecedented paper trail,” Politico reports. Continue reading.

Tucker Carlson and Devin Nunes: Vindman Should Just ‘Go Work in Ukraine’

“Why not just say, ‘Mr. Vindman and your lawyer brother, take a hike,’” Carlson fumed. “They are not in control of the government. It’s not their government.”

Hours after Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) questioned Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman’s patriotism, Fox News host Tucker Carlson and Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) called on the National Security Council official and Purple Heart recipient to be booted from his position and “go work in Ukraine.”

During a broadcast that largely ignored the live impeachment proceedings taking place, Carlson devoted an “investigative” segment to the Iraq War veteran after House impeachment managers referenced Vindman’s testimony throughout Thursday’s Senate trial. Why, Carlson asked, was Vindman still serving on the White House National Security Council as a Ukraine and Russia expert?

Before bringing Nunes on his primetime show Thursday night, the Fox News star complained that Vindman testified against his boss and acknowledged that “a foreign power keeps trying to recruit him,” wondering “how could someone like that keep his job.” Continue reading.

Devin Nunes ‘lied to the American people’: Hometown newspaper slams GOP congressman for ‘betraying our country’

AlterNet logoRep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) was scorched by his hometown newspaper in an editorial blasting the Trump supporter for his “betrayal.”

“Kiev, Ukraine, is nearly 6,200 miles from Tulare, Calif. That’s a long way from home for Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Tulare, who now faces explosive allegations that he and his staff contacted shadowy Ukrainian figures in an effort to betray American democracy,” The Fresno Bee noted. “Text messages released by the House Intelligence Committee last week reveal that a top Nunes aide named Derek Harvey – who on Trump’s National Security Council before he joined Nunes’ staff – sought direct contact with Ukrainian officials in an effort to smear former Vice President Joe Biden.”

Nunes, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, has been a leading defender of the president. Continue reading.
