FACT CHECK: Wardlow Cannot Hide from His “Proud” Work with Hate Group

Wardlow has proudly worked for an anti-LGBTQ hate group which opposes the ACA, marriage equality, and a woman’s right to choose

Minnesota – During tonight’s Attorney General debate between Congressman Keith Ellison and Doug Wardlow on KSTP, Congressman Keith Ellison reiterated his commitment to defending the rights of all Minnesotans, regardless of race, religion, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation. While Republican Doug Wardlow attempted to paper over his past, he cannot hide from his record of “proud” work with an anti-LGBTQ hate group that has filedat least 23 lawsuits against the Affordable Care Act, wants to criminalize people for who they love, and is working to overturn Roe v. Wade.

During a recent appearance on FOX 9, Wardlow proudly stood by his work as a lawyer for this extreme organization: “The Alliance Defending Freedom – I’m proud of the work I did there… I stand by the beliefs of the arguments that I made while I was at the Alliance Defending Freedom – absolutely.”

Wardlow’s record working with the Alliance Defending Freedom is the subject of an advertisement from Ellison’s campaign, which is currently airing on Minnesota television stations. In addition to the points advertisement notes that Wardlow’s hate group the group has been involved with 23 lawsuits against the Affordable Care Act, sued to undermine public schools, and fought to defend harassment at women’s clinics.

Doug Wardlow would be a disaster for civil rights, weaponizing the Attorney General’s office to limit the rights and freedoms of Minnesotans. As Attorney General, Congressman Ellison will enforce our civil rights laws to protect the freedoms of all Minnesotans.

FACT CHECK: Doug Wardlow Stands with Corporations over Minnesota’s Workers

Wardlow has a long history of pushing an extreme anti-worker agenda during his time in the State House

Congressman Ellison will always have the back of Minnesota’s workers and stand up to companies that cut corners and try to take advantage of them

Minnesota – During last night’s Attorney General debate between Congressman Keith Ellison and Doug Wardlow, Wardlow attempted to paint himself as a friend to Minnesota workers. But Wardlow’s extremely anti-worker record makes clear that he stands with large corporations over workers.

During his single term in the State House, Wardlow championed so-called “right to work” laws, which strip workers of their power to collectively bargain for better pay and working conditions for all.  Wardlow was so zealous about right to work that he even crossed his own party’s leadership to push the measure, even when other Republicans thought it was too extreme. Wardlow’s anti-work votes earned him a rare “0 percent” rating from the Minnesota AFL-CIO.

For years, Congressman Ellison has been a champion of organized labor and Minnesota’s working families. Ellison has fought for collective bargaining rights and a fair economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top. As Attorney General, Keith has promised to stand up to large corporations that cut corners on worker safety and cheat their workers out of fair pay by fighting wage theft.

Minnesota’s working families need an Attorney General who will stand up for them, not someone who will only serve large corporations.

FACT CHECK: Wardlow Would Use the Attorney General’s Office to Enforce President Trump’s Cruel Immigration Policies

Recent reporting counts the number of children detained at the border at more than 12,800, but Wardlow would enforce Trump’s immigration policies as AG

Minnesota  – During tonight’s Attorney General debate between Congressman Keith Ellison and Doug Wardlow on KSTP, Congressman Keith Ellison reiterated his long-standing belief in a humane immigration policy that treats people fairly while protecting the security of all Americans.

Meanwhile, Republican Doug Wardlow continued to stand by President Trump’s cruel immigration policies, even as recent reporting has shown thatmore than 12,800 children are being detained at the border in recent months.

But Wardlow not only supports the President’s cruel immigration policies, he would use the Attorney General’s Office to enforce them. In a recent WCCO TV interview, Wardlow stated his strong support for President Trump and his immigration policies:

WARDLOW:
“I think it’s very important that the Attorney General work with federal law enforcement to make sure Minnesotans are safe by enforcing our immigration laws”

INTERVIEWER:
“You are a strong supporter of President Trump’s. Do you feel that President Trump’s policies on immigration are right for Minnesota?”

WARDLOW:
“I think they are right for Minnesota.”

Last month, a Wardlow campaign document was released, stating that “Doug Wardlow will institute these duties when he is your MN Attorney General,” including: Defend President Trump’s agenda in court.”

Minnesotans need an Attorney General who will work for Minnesotans and protect the rights of all families, not someone who will serve President Trump and his cruel policy of family separation.

A group of faith leaders on Thursday condemned mailers sent out by Republican attorney general candidate Doug Wardlow as Islamophobic and intended to spread fear.

Wardlow’s fundraising mailers lambaste his Democratic opponent, U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, calling him “one of the most dangerous men in America” and saying he “pals around with radical Islamic groups and defends known terrorists.”

Wardlow’s mailers “are a significant departure from what America is all about. He has chosen to attack his opponent’s religion and he has chosen to attack religious institutions,” said Imam Asad Zaman, who spoke at a news conference along with two Lutheran pastors and a rabbi.

BREAKING: Doug Wardlow Believes in a “Second Unwritten Constitution”

New audio released today shows Doug Wardlow speaking to a Minnesota Tea Party gathering in 2013, describing his belief in the existence of a “second, unwritten Constitution” which he believes to be more fundamental than the United States Constitution he would be tasked with defending as Minnesota Attorney General.

BREAKING: Doug Wardlow believes in the existence of a “second, unwritten Constitution.”

“America has fallen, our Constitution, our institutions, have fallen, because this second, unwritten Constitution has been all but destroyed.”

Which Constitution would Wardlow defend as AG?

Wardlow’s remarks are worth reading in full:

“Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other. We all, like sheep, have gone astray.

Are political firings business as usual in the Minnesota attorney general’s office?

Was Doug Wardlow’s pledge to clean house — which received loud applause from those attending a GOP fundraiser — business as usual? Credit: Peter Callaghan, MinnPost

The Republican candidate for Minnesota attorney general is recorded at a partisan fundraiser promising to “fire 42 Democrats right off the bat and get Republican attorneys in there.”

DFLers reacted quickly, not just because it might violate ethical standards and even state law, but because it dents the GOP candidate’s claim that he will run an office free of politics.

The Republican, Doug Wardlow, now argues that his words were taken out of context because he preceded them by saying he wants lawyers who follow “the rule of law.” Besides, he argues, DFL attorneys general have fired attorneys after taking office.

New Website Highlights Republicans’ Extreme Nominee for Minnesota Attorney General

Doug Wardlow wants to use the AG’s office to serve President Trump and big corporations, not Minnesota families

Wardlow has proudly worked for an anti-LGBTQ hate group, opposes the ACA and a woman’s right to choose

The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) today launched a new website to inform Minnesotans about the extreme Republican nominee for Attorney General, Doug Wardlow. Wardlow, a former one-term State Representative, has vowed to use the Attorney General’s office to serve President Trump’s agenda, from overturning the Affordable Care Act and Roe v. Wade to suppressing voting rights.

“Minnesotans have a clear choice in the election for Minnesota Attorney General,” said DFL Chairman Ken Martin. “Congressman Ellison has dedicated his life to defending equal rights and greater opportunity for all Minnesotans, while Doug Wardlow has spent his career attacking the rights of LGBTQ people, women, and workers. We need someone in the Attorney General’s Office who will stand up for working families, not work for President Trump and big corporations.”

The new website, RealDougWardlow.com, and accompanying Facebook & Twitter pages, will highlight Wardlow’s commitment to politicizing the Office of Attorney General to serve President Trump, and his work for an anti-LGBTQ hate group.

During his one term in the Minnesota House, Wardlow worked to block and overturn the Affordable Care Act, and pushed extreme anti-labor legislation against the will of his own party. Learn more about Wardlow at RealDougWardlow.com.

Campaign messages meant to inspire fear: We’re better than this

The following commentary by Donna Greenberg Koren was posted on the MinnPost website August 28, 2018:

I received a political survey call last week that I can’t shake. The focus quickly turned to the attorney general’s race, and the messages that the Republican candidate, Doug Wardlow, is apparently testing. I hadn’t known anything about Wardlow, except his party; but now, I do.

His campaign, or one working on his behalf, appears to be testing messages against Muslims; immigrants; and a decades-old past association between the Democratic candidate, Keith Ellison, a Muslim, and a fringe group that Ellison disavowed years ago. These campaign messages don’t say who Wardlow is, or what he can do to serve Minnesota. They are designed to stir fear and hatred of the stranger, because of the way they dress, the color of their skin, the particulars of how they pray. They play on fear of the other, and they turned my stomach cold.

The next time that you or a loved one is in a hospital, look at who is serving you — the phlebotomist in the hijab who carefully places the needle in a vein that’s been threaded many times before. The nurse with skin the color of a shiny coffee bean, who smiles at you and says that he will pray for you, and means it, as he shows you how to empty your ileostomy appliance. The oncologist who came to America from India as a boy, who now holds your life in his hands. And your strikingly blunt but powerfully effective radiologist from China who saved you from a painful, invasive surgery.

Meet Doug Wardlow, the throwback homophobic candidate on Minnesota’s 2018 ballot

The following article by Hannah Jones was posted on the CityPages website August 27, 2018:

In March 2017, before Doug Wardlow had won the Republican primary for a shot at becoming Minnesota’s Attorney General, he sat in on a meeting of the Anoka-Hennepin School Board.

When his name was announced, Wardlow rose to the podium and bid the board members “good evening.” He told them he was there as a member of Alliance Defending Freedom, “a nonprofit legal organization that litigates in defense of free speech and religious liberty” in Minnesota and beyond.

He went on to say he was representing parents who were concerned that the district would start letting transgender students use the bathrooms that matched their gender identities. “Boys” should go to the boys’ facilities, he said, and “girls” to the girls’ room. Anyone who “professed” to be transgender could go use a single-stall restroom.

“I urge the District to act in accord with the simple reality that there are boys, and there are girls, and boys and girls are fundamentally different in ways that really do matter,” he said.
