Trump is surrounded by yes-men who are afraid to tell him ‘what he doesn’t want to hear’: Former economic adviser Gary Cohn

AlterNet logoThe United States’ last two presidents were criticized by some of their supporters for being overly deferential to advisors: there were liberals and progressives who believed that President Barack Obama became overly reliant on Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on economic policy and some conservatives who believed that President George W. Bush was too quick to defer to the neocon war hawks in his administration on foreign policy. But President Donald Trump has had the opposite problem: a tendency to grow angry and defensive when challenged by advisers — and Gary Cohn, Trump’s former chief economic adviser, fears that being surrounded by yes-men could prove problematic for Trump.

Trump’s administration, according to the Brookings Institution, has had an 80% turnover rate. Appearing on former Obama adviser David Axelrod’s podcast, “The Axe Files,” Cohn (who resigned from the Trump Administration in March 2018) asserted that Trump, at this point, might be lacking the constructive criticism he needs in the White House.

“We had an interesting nucleus of people when I was in the White House — the initial team,” Cohn told Axelrod during the interview. “We were not bashful. It was a group that was willing to tell the president what he needed to know, whether he wanted to hear it or not.”

Gary Cohn says Trump is ‘desperate’ for trade deal with China

Gary Cohn, President Trump’s former top economic adviser, says the president is “desperate” to reach a trade deal with China and is being ill-served by protectionist advisers who have left the White House “living in chaos” on major decisions.

“The president needs a win,” Cohn said in an interview with Freakonomics, a public radio show and podcast.

Trump expects a China deal to boost the stock market, which has treaded water for the past year, the former aide said. Cohn cast doubt on the president’s ability to obtain fundamental changes in China’s state-led economic system, one of his core negotiating objectives.

Trump economic adviser Gary Cohn resigned this week, and Trump bid him farewell by using what amounts to an anti-Semitic slur at a cabinet meeting.

Cohn, who did not resign after Trump called Nazis “very fine people,” finally quit this week after Trump announced tariffs that could lead to a trade war.

On Thursday morning, Trump told his assembled cabinet, “This is Gary Cohn’s last meeting in the cabinet, of the cabinet. He may be a globalist, but I still like him.” Continue reading “Trump slurs Jewish adviser during cabinet meeting”

Two top Trump advisers were asked why they don’t quit. Their answers speak volumes.

For the second time in two days Friday, one of the most senior members of the Trump administration was asked why he doesn’t resign. And for the second time in two days, that official did nothing to dispel the notion that he is very conflicted about serving President Trump.

Both Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and top White House economic adviser Gary Cohn have offered comments in recent days that suggested they were seeking distance from the president. Given those comments, each was asked some version of “Why do you continue to serve?” Continue reading “Two top Trump advisers were asked why they don’t quit. Gary Cohn: ‘Only morons pay the estate tax’

The following article by Jennifer M. Wood was posted on the Death and Taxes Magazine website August 29, 2017:

Donald Trump’s top economic adviser Gary Cohn doesn’t always see eye to eye with his boss, but when it comes to cold, hard cash, they both think that paying taxes is for suckers. According to The New York Times, Cohn managed to piss off a group of Senate Democrats when he joked that “only morons pay the estate tax.”

The comment was made earlier this year in response to a conversation Dems wanted to have about whether it might make sense — including financially — to repeal the estate tax. Cohn, the former president of Goldman Sachs, didn’t hesitate to make his opinion on the matter known. The comment was repeated by more than one person who was present, though a source close to Cohn told NYT that he never used the “m” word and that his comment was about “rich people with really bad tax planning.”

It’s also worth repeating The Times’ description of Cohn in the piece: Continue reading “Gary Cohn: ‘Only morons pay the estate tax’”
