Contrasts are big in the DFL and GOP budgets

Elections are about choices.

Right now, Democrats and Republicans are offering Minnesotans a strikingly different vision for our future. When you look at the budgets that DFL Gov. Tim Walz and Republican President Donald Trump just released, the divide between our plans, our values and our vision is clear. On issue after issue, the DFL is investing in Minnesotans while the Republican Party is attacking what makes Minnesota great.

DFLers know that health care is a right, not a privilege for the wealthy. That’s why Gov. Walz’s budget works to expand access to the care that all Minnesotans deserve. Walz wants to invest in a high-quality public option, ONECare, expand low-cost care options in Greater Minnesota and lower prescription drug prices. These are smart, sensible investments in the health and well-being of folks all across the state. Continue reading “Contrasts are big in the DFL and GOP budgets”

Immediately after President Donald Trump signed into law a tax overhaul that jacks up the deficit by $1.5 trillion—and unabashedly funnels enormous tax cuts to the nation’s millionaires, billionaires, and corporations—he and his colleagues in Congress made clear how they planned to pay for it: by slashing the very programs that help everyday people make ends meet. In February, President Trump released a budget that doubles down on his Robin Hood in reverse vision for the country. His proposals are draconian—seeking to dismantle the nation’s health care system; dramatically curtailing access to affordable housing and nutrition; and even threatening programs that Trump pledged not to touch, such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. President Trump unveiled his federal budget proposal Monday, which takes aim at many of the health and safety net programs that older Americans rely on. The plan sharply reduces funding for Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security Disability Insurance and food stamps.

Rarely do most of the elements of a president’s budget become law, as Congress would have to enact them. Historically that almost never happens. Continue reading “President’s Budget Targets Medicare, Medicaid and Food Stamps”

Republican Representative Paulsen Votes for Budget Cuts that Will Hurt Minnesotan Families

Republican Representatives Tom Emmer, Erik Paulsen, and Jason Lewis today voted to pass a budget that will hurt Minnesotan families. The budget makes drastic cuts to vital programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. It eliminates the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction, which saves Minnesotans thousands of dollars per year. On top of that, it is predicted to increase the budget deficit by at least $1.5 trillion.

“A budget is a moral document, and the Republican budget is a moral failure,” DFL Chairman Ken Martin said. “Minnesotans deserve a budget that ensures financial stability for the country–and for their family. This document does neither. It cuts critical programs that help working families keep food on the table while putting our nation on the path of economic disaster. Republican Representatives Emmer, Paulsen, and Lewis must be held accountable for voting for this misguided budget that will harm the nation’s economy, and Minnesotan’s pocketbooks.” Continue reading “Republican Representative Paulsen Votes for Budget Cuts that Will Hurt Minnesotan Families”

No Budget, No Tax Reform: GOP Faces Reality of Remaining Agenda

The following article by Lindsey McPherson was posted on the Roll Call website July 25, 2017:

House Republicans optimistic despite lacking votes for budget resolution

“Clearly, no budget, no tax reform.”
That comment made by House Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady on Thursday, and then again for good measure on Monday, is the primary selling point on which House Republican leaders are hoping to whip up enough support to pass their fiscal 2018 budget resolution. Yet that pitch has done little to appease the naysayers.

With the budget still lacking the needed votes, some GOP tax writers are concerned about the future of the yearslong goal to rewrite the tax code. But most of that concern remains shrouded in a cloud of optimism.

“I’m confident there are 218 Republicans in the House who came here to do bold, pro-growth tax reform,” Brady said. “And they know we can’t do it together until we have budget and reconciliation.” Continue reading “No Budget, No Tax Reform: GOP Faces Reality of Remaining Agenda”
