DFL Party Statement on the Anniversary of the Death of George Floyd

Saint Paul, Minnesota – Today, Minnesota DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement on the anniversary of the death of George Floyd:

“One year ago today, George Floyd was slowly and agonizingly murdered under the knee of then-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. George Floyd didn’t ask to be a symbol and he didn’t ask to give his life to motivate a mass movement, he just wanted to be able to breathe and we failed him.

“While Floyd’s killer has been brought to justice, that is not nearly enough. We cannot content ourselves with justice after the fact because that leaves in place the unjust systems that brought about George Floyd’s death in the first place. We must make real, durable, and systemic change to protect Black lives in Minnesota and across America. I urge Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and I urge Minnesota lawmakers to build on last year’s work by passing the police reform measures put forward by House DFLers. Failing to act is simply not an option.”

DFL Party celebrates President Biden’s ongoing success in the battle against

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – This week, specifically Thursday, April 29th, will mark President Joe Biden’s 100th day in office. To commemorate this, the DFL Party will spend the week highlighting various accomplishments of the start of Biden’s presidency. Today, the party is highlighting Biden’s successful efforts at battling COVID-19.

When Joe Biden took office, he announced the ambitious goal of delivering 100 vaccine million shots in the arms of the American people by the 100th day of his presidency. Biden met that goal after just 58 days in office, so he increased it to 200 million

Last week, Biden exceeded that goal as well. As things stand, more than 200 million vaccine doses have been distributed across the U.S. and over half of all eligible Minnesotans and Americans overall have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

DFL Party Statement on Black History Month

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Today, DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement commemorating the beginning of Black History Month:

“This month, we commemorate and pay tribute to the incredible contributions that Black Americans have made to the rich tapestry of American life and the history of our nation. Leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Nellie Stone Johnson, Roy Wilkins, Dr. Josie Johnson, Congressman John Lewis, and so many others worked, struggled, and sacrificed so much to lift up communities of color and help our nation live up to our ideals.

“If we are to follow in these leaders’ footsteps and carry on their work to build a truly just society, we must be honest about our successes and our shortcomings when it comes to racial equity. In January, I was both proud and moved to see Minnesota swear in our most diverse state legislature in state history, driven almost exclusively by DFLers. Our commitment to equity and fairness does not stop at building a more representative legislature, though. Ongoing racial disparities throughout our nation and significantly in Minnesota, from housing to education to the impact of COVID-19 and beyond, continue to erect barriers to achieving the American Dream for far too many Black and Brown Americans and that is unacceptable. As we celebrate Black History Month let’s honor the work of so many who came before us by rededicating ourselves to the fight for equity, fairness, and justice for all.”

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – Though some results are still outstanding, it looks as though almost every DFL Party-endorsed candidate won their primary election tonight. DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement on the strength of the DFL Party endorsement:

“Tonight, the grassroots democracy at the heart of the Minnesota DFL Party triumphed. With most results in, it appears that the candidates endorsed by the DFL Party won almost all of their primary elections.

“Our endorsement process is unique among state parties and I’m proud that it allows DFL Party supporters, activists, and concerned citizens to have a voice in the candidates we support and the values we champion. In the past few weeks, the DFL Party has made almost 1 million phone calls on behalf of our endorsed candidates and that organizing work has paid off in a major way tonight. Thanks to our grassroots endorsement process, the DFL Party is and will always remain a party of, by, and for the people of Minnesota.”

DFL Party Endorses Tina Smith for the United States Senate

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA Today, the Minnesota DFL Party announced that Tina Smith secured the DFL Party’s endorsement for re-election to the United States Senate.

Minnesota DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement:

“Today, I’m incredibly proud to announce that the Minnesota DFL Party has endorsed Tina Smith for re-election to the United States Senate. Senator Smith works across the aisle to get things done for Minnesota–whether it’s fighting to lower the price of insulin, expanding mental health services, increasing broadband access or making sure people get the skills they need to get good-paying jobs. And more recently as the nation combats coronavirus, she successfully fought to ensure free COVID-19 testing for all Americans.

“And right now, Tina isn’t shying away from the very real changes we need to make, including fixing the systems that fail to prevent abuses of power and racism in all forms. Minnesotans deserve an advocate, an ally, and a fighter like Tina Smith in the United States Senate.” Continue reading “DFL Party Endorses Tina Smith for the United States Senate”

DFL Party Statement on the Death of George Floyd

SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA – DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin released the following statement on the death of George Floyd at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers:

“George Floyd should still be alive today. Justice must be done for him, but it does not change that heartbreaking reality.

“Senseless and vicious killings like these shatter families, destroy trust, and erode the safety and well-being of black Americans everywhere. We must do so much better because this is a matter of life and death for so many across our nation. Black men and women should not have to live in fear of the police officers that are supposed to protect and serve them. They should not have to live in fear that going for a jog could be a death sentence. This violence perpetrated against communities of color has to end.”
